Hello,

I'm building a hackintosh for my brother for the holidays.  i would just build a pc, but hes a mac, (I apologize in advance).  Just wondering, he would be doing some medium audio editing and composing, and then just some light applications like web browsing, and facetime and stuff.  i was wondering if i should go with an i3, with hyperthreading, or an i5, with four cores.  I wanna build it for under $600 and i want 8 gigs of ram, an ssd of at least 60, and a 1tb hdd.  either just reccomend a processor or an entire build.  Also, should i get a dedicated low ends graphics card like a gt 620?  or can i run a hackintosh on an AMD APU.

I can help with programming and hardware.

You will need an Intel-based system if you want a rock-solid, compatible and stable system.

As for the budget, I am on it now. Is this $600 USD, CAD, AUD, NZD, or some other currency?

The G3258 does not work with OS X, and neither does the motherboard. Hackintoshes require careful parts selection.

This computer will do very well. You will need some files (PM me for them when you are ready to build), an Apple ID and another PC to run a VM on. You will not need a dedicated graphics card for this.

There is a process with these things, but to sum it up it goes like this:

Make an OS X VM (contact me for the necessary files and steps to do so)

Boot into OS X in the VM

Download Mavericks, but do not install.

Download UniBeast from the TonyMacx86 forums in the VM

Run UniBeast, install to a formatted 8GB+ flash drive

Download and install MultiBeast for Mavericks to another formatted USB flash drive

Reboot onto USB flash drive

Format OS X SSD as OS X Extended (Journaled)

Install OS X to it

Reboot onto SSD

Open MultiBeast, use these flags:

95716d1402491686-success-gigabyte-ga-h97

Install, reboot and you should be golden.

well then a z77 mobo and i3 3225 should work

But that's not only a shit setup, but also unnecessary.

I know what I am talking about when it comes to OS X hardware compatibility for the most part. The setup I posted is in budget, more powerful and will work properly.

For audio editing, your brother could likely start using software like Protools soon. So you may want to accommodate that into the build to add some future-proofing. I would recommend an i5 for that. For a graphics card, it could be a better option to go for an older graphics card that is used. You could get far better value within your budget and have the ability to upgrade later.

As for what is compatible with Hackintosh, I believe tonymacx86 has part compatibility lists.

Hope this helps  :)
