What make and model is the said laptop?

your mobo vendor should provide a list of compatible RAM solutions /or successfulRAM tests

edit: ahh, read over the laptop part...

Where did you find that?

It uses 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-8500 ram. Highest speed you can get (as far as i am aware) is 1333mhz. The board should be able to handle that, if not it uses 1066mhz in it's default manufacturer's spec.

what @Fulgrim said...if you lokk at the PB support site you will ( scavenger hunt provided) find some PC3-8500 modules...at other dealers ( like amazon) you will find compatible modules in the PC3-10600 range...

Wait I just looked on CPU-Z and it says "NB Frequency: 1597.3MhZ"... So, I can put 1600MhZ RAM in?

NB frequency has no effect on what ram frequency you can use.

My CPU has a 2000mhz NB, but only officially supports up to 1333mhz RAM.  I had to go through 2 sets of 1600mhz sticks to find a pair which worked with this chip.

OK, I've just checked and CPU- Z says it uses PC3-10700 RAM. Wouldn't it just be easier to take it apart and look at what it uses?

no, it would be easier to check all your 'guts' with something like AIDA64 ... ^^

Don't you have to pay for AIDA64?

yes indeed...but there should be some trial versions at your service...not sure if you can index all your components with them...

Probably just non-branded POS ram made just to meet the most basic requirements.

Check the stickers underneath for the full model number. You said 3GB, but that says 4GB. a 32bit OS would only read 3.2GB of ram, not the full 4GB.

I dont know much about laptops as I use a pc but this should apply to a laptop too (I think xD)  If you go into the bios and enable xmp then it overclocks the ram to run at its max speed, I did this on my pc as I have 2400mhz ram but it only ran at 1333 for some reason so I enabled xmp and it is running at its full speed now. Regarding your Ram though, if you have a 32 bit os and a processor that only supports 32 bit (4gb or less) then you can only upgrade to ram with a faster speed but same amount of space as you will need 64bit os and cpu in order to upgrade to 8gb of ram

(sry if im not clear :P)
