i7 affect gaming?

Go to solution Solved by Jamdude,

They will both perform near enough the same in games.  Go with the i5 if you're rig is just for gaming.

I planning to build a gaming pc and I wanted to just know that whether i7 has a significant performance effect on games such as framerates. But i do not know if i should go with i5 since its cheaper.

( Btw i was going with i7 4790k or a i5 4690k )

Help as soon as possible would be appreciated

for pure gaming i5 and a 290 is the best combo now

if you go for the i7 you may be using only GTX760 or 270X

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

The I7 will give you 2 frames at the very very best and that's well within the margin of error. Unless you do not plan to upgrade again for another 4-6 years get the I5.

If you have a very high budget like 2k+ then the i7 will help in some games but generally i5 is the way to go paired with a high end gpu

It is more likely to cost you frames in some games, after overclocking. i7s usually don't reach the clock speeds of i5s of the same binning quality, and games hardly use HT at all.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

That's why I said that he should only get the I7 if he intends to keep this upgrade for a substantial amount of time. I expect that in a few years games will use more than 4 cores/threads.

Poorly formulated. I3's have HT and games can use it. You mean to say that current games cannot use the extra threads gained from the HT on the I7's (since they give thread 5 6 7 and 8). Games can use hyperthreading though, just not the threads gained from an i7 :P..

You're right, HT threads are wonderful in highly repetitive or predictable workloads, and games do not fall into that category, or even a neighbouring universe of that category :P
