Hello,

I am thinking in purchasing the ASUS RT-N66U. It's not A/C but it's is 144$ at NCIX (http://secure1.ncix.com/products/?mode=productreviewread&product_id=68505)

What do you guys think? I am a bit disappointed that it doesn't have USB 3.0, but an HDD on a router is not critical or important for me (I don't think I'll use it, to be honest)

I need very good range, dual band, and my budget is around 150$ Canadian. I can go a bit higher, but it needs to be worth it.

I am mostly loss in this sea of routers, and marketing claims to be honest.

I currently have this old Linksys WRT160N v2, so I think anything will be a step up.

I am also planning on getting the ASUS USB-N53 for my parent computer. The computer is the next room as the router, but the walls are super thick. My current router has trouble.

The reason why I am not getting wireless AC, is because the system is a Core 2 Duo, and only has USB 2.0, so I don't think it will be helpful.

I am open to all brands of router. And I am open to Wireless AC

Thanks.

The ASUS N66u is a great router, I had one for a year and was very satisfied with it. Performs well, is extremely fast, and good range, though I have to RMA mine due to a hardware fault :(

I would say, go get it. I am using that router at the moment and have had no issues at all. Besides the obvious heating issue, it was in a bad spot. But keep it elevated and make sure it has room to breath and you should be golden.

I have the 68U. It's pretty great. The Software is kind of annoying, but it works regardless.

Hello,

I am thinking in purchasing the ASUS RT-N66U. .

Thanks.

I just got this router three days ago. Upgraded from a WRT160N v3. I'm extremely happy with it! Posted a lil review on it yesterday. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/200873-asus-rt-n66u-reviewexperience/

I think it comes with a stand, no? Using that should solve the problem, I believe, no?

It was my bad judgement, I had it installed in un-ideal area and it got a little hot for comfort. And yes, It does come with a stand if you wish to use it. I think that would solve any heating issues that you may have. If you have any.

I recommend the Netgear R6250, because the 802.11ac draft standard is now finalized and well established. It's also within your budget and you won't need to buy another router when you eventually upgrade to 802.11ac or buy a device that uses 802.11ac.

If you seriously don't want an 802.11ac router though, the RT-N56U is okay too. However all of the RT series of routers had a massive firmware bug recently where every external drive attached could be remotely accessed by a user with malicious intent. Everyone with one needs to patch their firmware immediately if you haven't already done so.

Yes it comes with a stand, I owned one of these routers for several months, it stood up to streaming/gaming/torrenting at the same time and it never locked up, wifi range was exceptionally good and it looks nice too (it is also nice to run your finger over the surface of it, it's a crinkly material lol)

I had the router sitting flat and never had any heat issues although it certainly gets warm make no mistake, it is warm to the touch all the time, the stand allows you to stand it up with the antennas being the uppermost part and the top of the router facing out, it looks OK in that position also but the shelf I situated it on was perfecly wide enough to just lay it down.

Sadly, the Netgear R6250 is no longer available, it would seem.

Firmware upgrade is the first thing I do with all my products. Thanks for the heads up.

What?

Sorry, it seems the CDN price is much higher than the US one. Strange. http://www.amazon.ca/R6250-11ac-Smart-Router-Gigabit/dp/B00BR3ZYIW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408676070&sr=8-1&keywords=r6250

The AC56U is a good choice too though. The R6250 offers another spatial stream and doesn't have the seemingly flaky bands that some users have reported with the AC56U.

So I have looked into it, and it seams that AC56U has horrible wireless 2.4GHz reception (based on user review). I am not sure if this is fix on the latest firmware or not, or even if the users updated their firmware.

As everything in my house is Wireless N, this is not good. :/

So, I guess ASUS RT-N66U? What bugs me with the ASUS RT-N66U, is that based on @Shaqo_Wyn review, it only does 20mbps wired. So if I get 30mbps internet, then it would be a waste, as my router would bottleneck it. :/

Hahaha, that's not what I was saying. I was saying that I have 20Mbps down from my ISP and that the router gives me all of it on both the wired and wireless connection. The router itself can give you up to 450Mbps on both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz band. So if you get 30Mbps from your ISP, the router will have absolutely no problem giving you the full 30Mbps on both the wired and wireless connection. It won't bottleneck.

Ok no more suggestions it looks like.

So ASUS RT-N66U is it.

As a recap, the reason why I am not getting the ASUS RT-AC66U, is because based on numerous user review and actual review, despite having blazing fast wireless AC, the Wireless N is bellow, in term of performance, then very mediocre routers, even cheap ones. Very strange behavior, but oh well. Everything I have at home is Wireless N, and I have no plans to change to buy anything in the next year or so with wireless AC.

Special thanks to everyone for your help.

It was greatly appreciated! :D

Specially you @Builder. I know we disagree on many things, but I like that you keep your cool. Full respect.

I'll let you know when I have it.

Yea it's too expensive, at 200$ I'll just get the Linksys WRT1900AC at this point :/

Flacky band? What does that mean? You mean it drops connections all the time?

That series of ASUS routers has a history of flakiness in the 2.4Ghz and/or 5Ghz bands. It might have been fixed in the latest firmware update though.

Well, if I encounter it, and can't fix it, then I'll return it, and ASUS, will join D-Link and Creative, for the GoodBytes' Ban For Life Award.
