Closed or semi open/open headphones for FPS.....

chingpot

This is probably getting anal but I read here and there a few comments saying semi open/open was better for pinpointing players in some fps (soundwhoring right), better soundstage?, is this the case and why?

is closed that much of a difference in this regard, i'm leaning towards closed as I will be using new headphones for film and music and rather not everyone else have to hear it as well.

Open-Back headphones tend to have a larger soundstage. That means sound waves do not get as congested inside the ear cup compared to closed back headphones.

What that means is you have better seperation and a more "spacious" sound. So you can pinpoint what is what, and some frequencies do not get veiled by others.

Some closed headphones have bigger soundstage than others, but they're not really made for that. Open-Back headphones dominate that area.

You can always grab two headphones if budget allows.

Just make sure you get a somewhat neutral pair of closed headphones for editing.

Thank you, nicely explained

Both open-back and closed-back headphones can have shit positional audio, really depends on the headphones you're looking at.

First, what is the environment you're in? Are you playing in a silent room with no one else in it? Open-back.

Are you playing with other people in the room and full of ambient noises around (cars, television, people talking etc.)? Closed-back.

Second, you need a pair of headphones with good positioning. You can look at this guide: http://www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-update-7-9-2014-ultrasone-hfi-15g-added

There's headphones listed for all prices range. You need to find one with the highest possible "competitive" score but with still a good score in other categories because you don't want to jeopardize the sound quality when you're doing other things like listening to music or watching movies.

Example of good ones:

Open $150: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Open-Air-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1385979471&sr=1-2&keywords=ad700

Oh.

Well at this price range, it doesn't really matter what you get. Just buy from a trusted audio company and you should be good to go. I don't know anything about Superlux so I can't really comment on them.
