The AMD 7990

Go to solution Solved by Najuno,

Thanks, so would the R9 280X CF deliver the same or better performance than the 7990?

It's save to say that a 280X CF will be the better choice in all aspects :) .

That's like to price of a 290, isn't it? As long as it's still in good condition and not an ex miner, I'd jump on it. I know a guy with a 7990 and he loves it.

It's really just a slightly watered down 280X Crossfire. In some cases that too could be cheaper than a 290X but not always. If you're OK with the idea of running crossfire and the power it might consume, it's an awesome card IMO.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

This card has still a lot of raw computing power no doubt about it... but in all reality it has been a nightmare for a lot of people out there.

A friend of mine had it and what can I say... the microstuttering was killing my eyes (I'm very sensitive to it), with that being said I am using a GTX 780 Ti 2 way SLI atm and have no issues. As well I've seen a R9 290 CF live and same scenario, all felt smooth and nice.

The 7990 is a hell of a hot running card. If I were you I'd rather get a R9 290 with a nice aftermarket cooler design, the card will run cooler and it's overall the better choice regardless of the raw power.

Isn't a 7990 just 2 7970s strapped together?

You can get second hand 280x non-reference cards for about £130 each second hand (I presume this £250 7990 is second hand too). Two of them would be better for cooling performance.

Yes it is, but with a bad cooler design and the OC potential is limited due to the TDP of the dual chip GPU. I was never a friend of dual chipped cards, just like you wrote get 2 single cards and get the better cooling, OC potential and less issues with it.

Didn't realise it would be that soon, thanks

Scratch that, all they released is an R9 285 which is basically an R9 280 with 2 gb of vram that won't be so power hungry. You're better off with a pair of 280x's.

...Why would you get 280x CF?

Isn't it universally agreed that two low end cards isn't as worthwhile as one high end card?

Quit being bipolar, guys

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it
