Hello everyone, I'm going to buy an i7 4770k today and I need a new MB to use it. I'm a little short on money so I'm trying to get the best possible value. That said, I also wanted to find a MB that have some features...

- SSD Support(M.2)

- A good amount of fan readers (I wanted to have 8, but I don't know if I can find one with this much)

- SLI Support (I have a GTX 780 but maybe in the future I'd buy another one of this badboy...)

- Pretend to overclock CPU to about 4.1 or 4.3 GHz

Someone offered me the ASROCK FATAL1TY Z97 KILLER but it doesn't support SLI and I'm also afraid that it quality is crap and/or won't support much overclocking. I'm really new to this MB thing, so I'm sorry if I wrote any stupidity here haha. Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't quite get the diference between them, could you point it out for me?

So Processors are compatible with boards based on their socket type (which for you would be LGA1150) and the board series. The Z87 board series supports the i5 4670K and the i7 4770K, but it won't support the Haswell refresh coming soon. Z97 boards will. So remember: compatibility is based on socket type and board series.

Basically, my Z87 board runs my current CPU just fine, but I have almost no upgrade headway. Anyone with a Z97 board has plenty of capability to upgrade their CPU over the next year.

*edit: and if you want to overclock get the i7 4790K cuz the Devil's Canyon stuff has fewer thermal issues than the 4770k

Why aren't you getting a 4790K?

I live in Brazil, stuff here is almost 3 times more expansive then on US, so the 4790k is still very expensive arround here, but I'd consider if the diferences were big between this and the 4770k, do you think it's worth it? (4770k here is 391 dolars and 4790k is 484 dolars)

I see, that seems like a good deal, thank you.

Z87 does support devils canyon (which is already out) with a simple bios update--simple if you have a first gen haswell chip anyway. I also would consider an upgrade to devils canyon or broadwell a huge improvement. Broadwell will only he 5% better than haswell at best (unless intel does something crazy).

OP should go for z97 anyway since it's not really more expensive and will work with the 4790k straight of te box.

@OP, z97 supports m.2 and Sata express, as well as support for broadwell. That's pretty much it.

id personally get the 4770k then. The difference between the 4790k and 4770k is that the 4790k will run a bit cooler and should overclock more consistently between chips. So, if the cost difference is that much is personally go with the 4770k and even a z87 board if it's that much cheaper than z97 ( although you do then lose the ability to get an m.2 ssd).

Erm, Haswell Refresh does work on Z87 boards with the correct bios updates... Even the last gen LGA 1155 had the same type of compatibility

the z97 boards aren't that expensive here so it's fine to get one, do you think the asrock one I mentioned on the beggining is a bad choice?

asrock, Msi, asus, or gigabyte.....they all have their flaws and they all have their followers and haters.

Me, personally, I like Msi...but you really can't go wrong. If get whatever z97 board meets you're requirements and is priced competitively. With that said, I think I've read about more issues with asrock, but that may be complete bullshit....so, get the cheapest board that meets you're requirements and is from one of the above four mentioned companies.

Offered? Dude, that is a really good motherboard and does everything you ask without a sweat. Do you really need SLI? Are you gonna use dual gpu?

Anyways, any brand is ok nowadays. Asus, msi, asrock, etc.. they are all good and offer you basicly the same. Personally, i like asrock and msi because everything simply... works with them. Asus rog series is also awesome.

So just go for one you like by looks / features and that is in range of your budget.

I said offered but it doesn't mean it was free haha, I think I'm going to stick with the asrock, it's a great value, I don't think I want to dive into SLI world (so many games doesn't work well with it) and it has a bunch of cool features that really got my attention. Thanks for your opinion!

i can tell you pretty much that i own a fatality killer b85 and it completly rocks. Got my 4670k at 4.4ghz working like a breeze. The uefi is so simple (but not lacking features), the onboard sound is awesome, the nic is very good (some users report problems with killer nic software, so just use the driver without the software - use asrock xfastlan instead). The motherboard utility is also well organised/ good looking. Now, imagine that one, wich is 1 gen after mine and rated alot higher than mine (since its a z97)...

I garantee you that you won't be disapointed.
