Questions about overclocking a 290x

I have a 290x tri-x model. During any game, watch dogs, metro, crysis, etc My max temp is 81c. Could I try to overclock a little or is the temp getting to high on stock clock speeds? 1040 core 1300 mem

Thats what I was thinking.

find the max fan speed you're comfortable with with some game noise in the background (for instance 60%) and set that speed in msi afterburner for around 70-80*c so once your card gets to that temp your fans will ramp up to that speed.

edit-example, my cards REALLY quiet at 45% so ive set it to that between 60-70*c, bear in my my gpu's die is pretty small.
when not in game it idles along at 40% fan speed at 45*c (could have it lower but who cares)

find the typical  temp you get while gaming and add 5 degrees above and below it, thats your "gaming zone".

if you have progressive ramping fan speeds as teh fan get hot the fans ramp up....then more air is moved so it cools down and the fans slow down...so it gets hotter and the fans ramp up, and down, and up, and down... hence why i have that flat spot.

i dont have a tri-x (want one..) so i dont know what the typical temps are and i dont know if your using headphones so cant hear yor pc or your typical gamign volume or do you play loud games with explosions or do you play quiet rpg's?

ramp the fan speed up manually 5% at a time with a youtube video playing in the background and find the point where the noise becomes encroaching/too much. thats your upper fan speed limit (like 65%?), then set that speed in that "gaming zone" range of temps.

edit- this should be a bit like what you need, give it a try and if it is too loud turn the fans down to a bearable level, if its too hot turn the fans up, if its too loud and too hot...somethings wrong because tri-x's are awesome.

 

 

also, let it idle on the desktop for as long as you can (10 mins+) and find a minimum idle temp say 35*c? and set the fans speeds to like 30 or 40% (as logn as they're quiet) from 35*c-40*c that way when your on desktop and the pc's warmed up or watching a youtube video the cards still silent and will only start to ramp up once it goes into a game and exceeds 40*c

ALL of this depends on how your card behaves, this is a little guide on how to set it up, not what settings will actually work for you.

edit- redone the graphic, the graph changes with different cards and different user preferences (noise, heat levels etc)

Around 65-70% is where it becomes to audible for me.

well id try setting it to 65% between 75-85*c and then do some gaming and see if it exceeds 85*c (you'll likely hear it if it does), IF it does try 68% fan speed and retry.

bear in mind the 290's from amd came at 95*c so they'e happy to warrant that, what temps your okay with is upto you.

also as i said, find the idle temp for desktop and set the fans to a low enough speed that even when the rooms quiet...you cant hear them.

i can set my fans to 35% but i set them to 40% because its still silent and the line that ramps up 9to the gamign zone) is more gradual, the more vertical the lines rise the more noticable it will be.

Are you saying you're having 81-82 oC at 65-70% fan usage ?

No sir. This was just at whatever the fan happened to be at. Just now doing the custom fan speeds and what not.

With 70% fan speed, you should get something like 72 oC at full load.

this is probably pretty close (give or take on the idle/gaming temps) bear in mind i dont know how it sounds...

try 40% at upto >45*c

65% at 75-85*c.

your max temp of 73*c means you're only just into the flat bit of the gaming zone, if you're okay with a few more degrees you could knock it down 5% and make it quieter.

About 15 mins in playing Metro Lastlight it stayed steady 70-71c. Is this still to high? Tops out at 74c during some spots.
