Cleaning Reference Dual 7970's

Hi Guys

 

Just wanted to know if anyone has cleaned a reference 7970 mine seem to have a lot of dust on the fan blades.

 

Both are curretly out of warranty .

 

Any advise on how clean them do's and don'ts.

 

They are currently not over heating during game play but I was just thinking of doing some preventative maintenance was not sure how to go about it.

 

Your advice is appreciated.

Sucking the dust out with from the fan fins with a dyson vaccum didn't work very well. Tried that already they still look pretty dirty, which I am guessing is hindering their performance.

I would use compressed air to blow the dust out instead of using a vaccum. If you want better temperatures, I would try replacing the thermal paste on these cards:http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/10418-how-to-change-your-gpus-thermal-paste-with-pictures/

• Q-tips (cotton swabs)
• Can of compressed air (used for cleaning / dusting electronics)
• Static-free cloth
• Paper towels (can come in handy)

You can disassemble the cooler for a bit easier cleaning if you wish...this voids the warranty though.

On the side of the GPU there are roughly 6 black screws. Unscrewing them allows the top shroud to come off to give you better access to the fan fins and the cooling fins. You might want to do this because my 290 had dust packed in across the cooling fins
