Yeah that's probably a bit long. How much do you earn per hour and how many hours a week do you work?

Far too subjective to give you a concrete answer; basically just work out what your hourly wage is, what your expenses are, what you want to save up to and then work out how you can save money faster (eg not going out all the time, don't buy unnecessary things) and you should reach your goal faster. Good luck.

You cannot control the time it takes to save a certain amount of money because you can't control the amount of money you work for, just save until you can afford what you want. However, you might want to aim a little lower or you'll be saving for a long time! Good on you for getting a job and starting to save your own money at your age. Also our tech prices are getting better... slowly.

Just save up like 2k or 2.5k and then build your plans just because new stuff might come out. dont get your heart set one anything, just in case something else comes out thats better.

seems like quite a long time to have the build planed, by the time you can afford it there will be better options than the 780. you should continue saving but don't focus on the details just yet. good luck n your first build :)

He should get an idea of what he wants, though, such as the color scheme, performance, etc. It's not a bad thing to get in to the details, remember that at 15 you probably have more free time than when you're older.

And if anything he can plan for a build now and as new parts come out he can swap them out as he sees fit, reconsider his options, and just keep what he's planning up to date while still having an idea of what he's working towards.

My advice would be to give your parents your bankcards/any form of withdrawing money. Not only will it mean you can't make insta-purchases but also it'll make you think twice about spending if you've got to go see a parent to withdraw money.

Exactly, it's best that he doesn't plan the build at the last minute, missing out on that valuable time to learn what and what not to do.

Unless his parents are like mine and they think about computers like this: If it ain't broke, don't replace it! (my mom is rockin a stone-age pentium4 machine).

I'd say get a decent case and PSU, then buy a second hand 2500K (there will be lots of them on the market with haswell coming out) + p67/z68 motherboard, and 8 gb ram, and then spend about 300 on a decent graphics card. Save your money and upgrade along the way, your rig will in the long term be better, and you'll keep having fun building and re-building your pc :)

As previously mentioned, stop yourself from buying stuff you don't need and try pickup some extra shifts.
