There's almost always a loss in quality through format conversions, that may or may not be audible.

The space savings isn't much relative to how cheap storage is and how little space lossy MP3's already take. I would think that it really isn't worth the effort.

There was a thread on Headfi in the Sound Science section where some guys were doing experiements on how many times a person can take a lossy file and making another lossy file out of it, until we hear an audible difference. Don't recall the answer, but it was many times before people could hear a difference. I found it to be an interesting exercise.

I don't see a real reason other than maybe some mp3 players not being able to play acc and then going to mp3. but going from mp3 to acc is kinda silly

Technically, there will definitely be a drop in quality.

 

Will you be able to hear it? Probably not.
