I built a budget gaming rig back in 2009 with:

phenom ii x2 545 (couldn't unlock extra cores)

9800gt

4gb ram

GA-MA770T-UD3P(old, outdated motherboard)

550 watt corsair psu (overkill I know, but I didn't know what I was doing)

Using a 1920x1080 acer monitor and will probably continue to use it

I'm looking to build another budget gaming pc and can't decide between something like an fx-6300 and an i3-4150. I want to keep it low power if possible and don't really plan to OC. My budget is around $700, but I might bump it up to go with an i5. I just want to stay as cheap as possible.

I have a 6870 gpu that a friend gave me so I'll probably just use that for the time being.

I've bought a lot of games on steam such as metro: last light and divinity original sin and they are just unplayable. I just wanted to see some thoughts on getting an intel motherboard and an i3-4150 and upgrading to an i5 later or just go for an amd setup since I'm on a pretty tight budget.

Sorry if this has been asked 1000 times, but I just can't get a conclusion.

if looking at an entirely new system for 700, you should take a look at something like a pentium+ 270x

though you will have to oc the pentium.

otherwise, a 6300+ 270x would be nice.

Thanks for the replies. Any thoughts on sticking with the 6870? It still seems like a decent card for 1080p gaming.

if you have to, use the 6870 first and invest the 700 into rest of the parts so you can get a better gpu for like $200~ 1 or 2 months down the road.
