I have downloaded a freenas iso and put it on a 16gb usb driver. I try to boot from it to install it to my boot hdd in the server and it just shoes a black screen and nothing changes. I have never used freenas so I have no clue.

Would it not be a better option to go direct to their forums for a fix?

Someone may have an answer, but it'd be easier to go direct to their forum.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

I will if this doesn't work. I love this forum  and answers come faster. I want to have this done tonight if I can.

It may sound stupid but are you booting off of the correct drive?

Ok, Make sure you installed it loaded the iso onto the drive correctly. Use this guide:

http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Burning_an_IMG_File

EDIT:

Its also possible your motherboard doesn't support USB booting, if it is really old.

Can you give me a run down of the hardware you're installing freenas on?

You're welcome, I am trying to research error 5, and 6 as I have never came across them before, how ever information is scarce, the most I can find is related to the hard drives, Try disconnecting the harddrives, and loading the installation media, I know I seem like I am going out on a leg here, that's kind of because I am haha. If that doesn't work,  can you add more information, as to the error I mean. Also make sure the installation media is correct for the architecture.

I did a quick search and read that it does take a while, even upto 10 minutes. If it goes beyond that I would hard reset and try again.

It ran but now soft update inconstancy keeps popping up. Sorry I don't know anything about freenas.

*EDIT*

That ran but now I get "Enter full pathname of shell or RETURN for /bin/sh:"

I assume that I should use "RETURN"

What do you think?

I read more related to the harddrive, it is very possible that it is the problem, I remember having issues installing FreeNAS on a big harddrive, Try installing from the CD onto the USB drive, and boot off of the USB drive if you can, if not, Swap harddrives if you have one handy

I may have to point you to the FreeNAS forums, I am personally running out of ideas... You could try an older version of FreeNAS I am still running 8.2. Other then that I am fresh out and Google doesn't seem to be much help.

Sorry I couldn't have helped better.

It is actually recommended to run FreeNAS from a USB drive because if it is installed on a HDD, you will be unable to make use of all the space of the HDD.

Desktop: Intel Core i7-6700K, ASUS Z170-A, ASUS STRIX GTX 1080 Ti, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB Samsund 840 Pro, Seasonic X series 650W PSU, Fractal Design Define R4, 2x5TB HDD

Hypervisor 1: Intel Xeon E5-2630L, ASRock EPC612D8, 16GB DDR4 ECC RAM, Intel RT3WB080 8-port RAID controller plus expansion card, Norco RPC-4020 case, 20x2TB WD Red HDD

Other spare hypervisors: Dell Poweredge 2950, HP Proliant DL380 G5

Laptops: ThinkPads, lots of ThinkPads
