Motherboard Selection

Go to solution Solved by patrickjp93,

Bro, I am expecting MSI Z97 Gaming 7 would go for 4-5 years, let me know if this expectation is correct.

If it lasts you less than 4 I'd feel obligated to buy you a replacement (assuming it's not the 1/1000 which bricks in a couple days of use, which is something any board from any maker can do even if it passes factory inspections).

It will last you 5 years easy, probably 7 or more.

Hi,

F*** my mobo got busted yesterday, socket get damaged and I am going to replace it.

Mobo: ASUS Z87 PRO motherboard

But now this mobo is out of stock from the website I purchased.

So now I have an opportunity to buy a better one

I came to the conclusions to 2 final motherboards which I like the best:-

1. Asus Sabertooth Z87 Motherboard

2. Asus Maximus V1 Hero Motherboard

Please suggest one of these keeping in mind below:-

\I have H100I cpu cooler

I have I7 4770K Processor

I have Cooler Master SE cabinet.

I have Corsair vs650 PSU

i have 16 GB 1800 MHZ Gskill ripjaws

I have MSI 280X R9 3G gaming GPU

Please suggest.

Thanks & Regards,

Munish

Are you considering a Broadwell upgrade down the line? If so, go with Z97 since it's confirmed to be Broadwell's chipset in addition to the Devil's Canyon chips.

Real question is, do you need these features? 90% of them are available on channel boards but aren't marketed as heavily.

Better is subjective. It's definitely better value and you'll get the same overclock / sound / whatever from it so I see no reason to spend more myself.

Or use the @mikewaals function to tell people you've replied to them specifically.

But if they've asked multiple questions they'd probably want to know which I'm replying too specifically.

It's not that it's superior. It's at a better price point while maintaining most of the same hardware expansion (and better onboard audio speaking from experience) features. Most people don't really use the ROG features/software. If you do, get it, but honestly the MSI Gaming 5/7 is a better choice on price/hardware ratio.

Hmm I feel I should go for MSI, I was just thinking ASUS has better repo than MSI

Yea thanks, I can only go for the MSI Gaming 5/7 if my existing components are compatible with this mother board, so please tell if the above components I posted are compatible.

Yep, compatibility issues are only with trying to use a new devil's canyon cpu in a old z87 board.

ASUS were the best back in the day, but recently the likes of msi, gigabyte and asrock have been churning out better boards for less

Wouldn't say better (except on audio, where MSI kicked their ass) but definitely near-equal for a better price. for workstations, I think I'd still err on the side of ASUS unless someone can really talk me into someone else, but for mainstream people and lesser enthusiasts, yeah, Asus ROG is way too expensive for what you get imho.

If you're gonna get a 4770k, why not just go for the 4790k? They're really close in price point, and with the money you save on the mobo you can make up the difference, and that's a big difference in how hot the chip runs and how fast it runs.

Edit: I'm a ditz, you're reusing your CPU. Ignore that part.

I am not able to get you when you say trying to use a new devil's canyon cpu in an old z87 board, my z87 is damaged.

Did you meant that CPU I7 4770K wont work with MSI GAMING 7

That's not it at all. Z87 boards SOMETIMES can support devil's canyon chips (G3258, 4690k, 4790k only), but not always. You're fine. The 4770k will be fine in the MSI Z97 Gaming boards.

ok it seems there is some confusion , let me clear it out.

My ASUS Z87 Pro motherboard is damaged, so I am planning to get the replacement but because the website do not have ASUS Z87 pro anymore, I am planning to buy a new mobo.

I have already posted the components I have with me now and I am looking only the compatible mobo with these components.

So I want a better speed only, so now do you think ASUS has better speed.

I would be running some heavy duty applications on the my PC, so keeping that in my mind, let me know which motherboard.

I am not worrying about price, I want a future safe mobo which should runs around 2-3 years.

And the MSI Z97  Gaming 5/7 is plenty for that. I just built my Dad a 10-year rig based on it.

This one, right? As long as the HDMI port is working, it's compatible.
