Eyefinity setup/port question

Tacitus

Hey, so I am considering building a system to run eyefinity, I would like to use three Dell u2414h monitors, and power it with crossfire r9 290 GPUs (non-x variants).

The GPU has the following outputs:

- 2x DVI-D

- 1x HDMI

- 1x Displayport

The monitors have the following inputs:

- 2x HDMI (MHL) [could someone explain to me what MHL is?]

- 1x Displayport

- 1x mini-displayport

Is it possible to set this up without any expensive adapters/converters? I couldn't find a DVI male to DP female adapter, and I would like to know before I begin setting any of this in motion (I need to buy a new monitor next week and was going to get one of the monitors now and the other two next month, I can only afford one right now).

MHL = Mobile High-Definition Link

basically mobile phone to output display to an external display

have you look at Display Port hubs?

you can daisy chain using display ports

or look for display ports to HDMI converter

HDMI is still good for your monitor as they are full HD

the only case when your monitor is 4K then you should avoid HDMI outputs

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Thanks for this, but afaik I can just connect one monitor via HDMI, one via DP, and then the third one is the blank for me?

Can I get a DVI-D - HDMI adapter, or a DVI-D to Displayport adapter.

How many displays need to be connected via DP for Eyefinity to work?

DVI-D - HDMI adapter will work but not for the DVI-D to displayport

displayport is an active type of display output

it can down convert but no up convert from other display modes

DisplayPort hubs can support up to 3 display from 1 port using Multi Stream Transport like the one below

Thanks for that, and for the link.

So now then, would an eyefinity setup using one displayport, one HDMI port, and one DVI-D port being converted to HDMI function correctly? That would result in one DP and two HDMI for the three connections.

in theory it should work as well

but i dont have the GPU to confirm this :P

I will suggest reading the AMD FAQ
