TRIM...sh*t

I've been TRIMming my drive once or twice a month since I got it, and then I read this today http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28158751-

"Windows 7 onward has native TRIM support, so the Intel Toolbox "Optimizer" feature serves no purpose, and (especially if scheduled periodically) can on newer OSes actually decrease the life expectancy of the SSD."

But then it goes on to say that running it on a Samsung drive thru Magician actually helps because it does garbage collection? Does that mean that Intel drives don't have garbage collection? Or do they just run it on schedule in the background, and Samsung drives require manual initiation??

If this is all true then many people have been spreading serious BS about TRIM...and I really need to watch out for my drive better...and it also makes the MX100 with its lack of Toolbox software all that much more attractive...

EVERY SSD (or rather every flash based device) HAS AUTOMATIC GARBAGE COLLECTION. No way around this, because the way flash works. So yeah, even intel drives have garbage collection.

Trim on the othre hand has little to do with GC; Trim is only a command, that OS sends to the drive, which tells the drive you actually deleted something (so GC can work more efficiently, since it doesnt move around deleted data). Without TRIM, ssds doesn't know you deleted something up until you write something new to that sector (than it knows the old data is actually invalid and erases it). Flash unlike HDDs needs to be erased prior to writing, thats why garbage collection is needed:

So doing manual trim does absolutly nothing if your OS supports it natively. No need to do it.

Also manually trimming drive does not decrease lifespan. Thats also BS.

Exactly. Toolbox really isn't needed with modern ssds and its really just a gimmick to attract buyers. Proper SSD doesn't need any manual input.
