Hi all. Today I tried to download a file and I got a message from avg saying it was possible malware. When I clicked avg to remove it, Avg said it had to restart to remove it. When it restarted all my program icons were removed and all every program was removed from the start menu. When I go into my program files all the folders are there though they are all empty. I have never had anything like this happen before. I just did a full scan and it is saying no threats detected.Should I just reinstall windows. Thanks

Most likely a virus... You can go looking for manual fixes, but it will be hard...

I've encountered a virus that imitates Avast's interface... Removed it via reformat and recovered the uninfected files using  a Linux-based system...

I had the samme happen to me with mbab (malwarebytes), only that reformated my entire drive, no os, no annything, that's why I kept a 3tb backupdrive of all my files ;) So I would blame AVG. Make sure you have a official version and not a bad one, I accidentally got my mbam of cnet, so that's how my pc got f'ed.
