long story short. I have an apartment. I pay for my own internet. I have wifi and ethernet ports throughout my apartment. I have two new roommates. 1 roommate plugged his router into the Ethernet port in his room. I have no idea how secure his router is at this given moment. Im out of town and I was just thinking about this. is there software/program that can prevent people on his network from viewing my network despite being a pass through from my modem/router to my airport extreme to his linksys? I know it can be done but the networks ive been on where this was implement was commercial buildings personal public wifi.

current network setup:

internet tubes -> modem/router -> router -> roommates linksys

what I think I want:

internet tubes -> modem/router -> router

                                                  -> linksys

In simple question form: if his network has no password to connect, how can I protect my network that he is piggybacking off of?

There are two options.

MMake sure he uses a different subnet to you. But that would require his cooperation.

TThe other is to set up 2vlans 1 for you and 1 for him. These vans can be port specific and don't alow trafic to talk across multiple vans with out a router being specifically told to do it (ie you have to tell it to do so)

PProbably vlan is the best option for you. He will have to set his router up to accept the vlan that you put him on or he doesn't have a connection at all.

Alternatively you could just ask him either to not use the AP and use your WiFi instead or secure it. That way you don't have to buy new hardware and might even stop his wireless signal from interfering with the rest of your wireless traffic. This is assuming that you're worried about neighbours accessing your network, stealing your internets and using your network connected gear and not him accessing it.

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing

Pretty sure regular consumer routers don't let you change VLAN.

OP it depends on what you mean by "prevent people on his network from viewing my network". If you are using secured wireless (like WPA2) then he won't be able to sniff your traffic. If you don't want him to get access to things on your computer then you just have to change your share settings. He will still be able to ping you, see computers on the network and all that, but he won't be able to do anything malicious. I'd be more worried about people stealing your bandwidth, and you can't protect yourself against that as long as his network is open. Just tell him to get a password.

Actually the other option for you to do is just change your subnet. If he is on say 255.255.255.0 and you can get yours to say 255.255.3.0 he will not be able to access your network due to the subnet. Anything you for will take some setting up. The other option is to put him on a dmz and make him use a static ip

Your first idea is very flawed because if someone manually changes their IP they would gain access again.

Your other suggestion is decent though. He wouldn't even have to make him use a static IP.
