Hi, i am planning to build a pc for gaming and school work (which includes using Autodesk programs such as Revit, Inventor and CAD). The price of all the components so far is $1529 AUD. I would like to know if there is anything that someone would recommend changing and to what i should change it to as i would like to make the build cheaper (say as close to $1000 AUD as possible)

Here is a list of parts that i have picked: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/HgYHqs

CPU: intel core i5 4690k

CPU cooler: cooler master seidon 120V liquid cooler

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 ATX LGA1150

Memory: kingston DDR3 8Gb (will later upgrade to 16Gb (2x8Gb) kit)

storage: kingston 120Gb 300 series SSD 2.5"

WD caviar blue 1TB HDD 3.5"

GPU: gigabyte Nvidia GTX770 4Gb

PSU: Corsair CX 500W 80+ bronze ATX power supply.

I already have peripherals such as a mouse and keyboard. Also if anyone could recommend to me a cheap 23" 1080p monitor it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help you have given me.

Kingstons v300 SSDs have earned a bad rep after switching to lower quality components without telling customers. I got mine before they switched it.

otherwise that looks great, although I'd go with the 2gb 770 if you're only going to be playing at 1080p

also, go for better ram. get 1600mhz+. the speed won't be a huge increase, but manufacturers tend to put higher quality blue smoke into the faster memory.

I think i will stay  with the scout case, but do you think it would be worth staying with the stock fans and upgrade to the corsair quiet edition fans at a later date and get an optical drive at a later date as well to save another $60?

This R9 280X gpu is cheaper. The GTX770 and R9 280X are pretty evenly matched.

Hi there, regarding the hard drive, WD Blue is a good choice in case you need it for normal everyday use.

If you are going to use the drive for gaming and heavy programs, then you could check the WD Black -

it is suitable for  intensive work with data and will still fit your budget.

Below you can find links to both drives' specs on the WD website.

Thanks for the replies, i have changed the SSD to the Adata and changed the GPU to the 2Gb version.

Will you be rendering with this machine? If so definitely stay with nvidia to take advantage of cuda and iray rendering, and you may run into problems with a 2gb card rendering animations and some large dimension still scenes. If you're rendering scenes at 1024x768, 2gb will be plenty.

The way I have my machine set up is my os and program files are on a 1tb sshd, but all my revit and autocad files are on the ssd. this is faster than having os and programs on an ssd and files on a hdd or sshd.

edit: i couldnt find the article, I believe it was on cadspeed, but here is a chart the revit team made to find the best configuration for using survey data from point cloud (lidap). i believe the results were similar for a 1gb revit model with several linked dwgs, which is why i set my workstation up as stated.
