MSI Z97 Gaming 3 VS an ROG Board.

What I would like to know is the ROG board really worth the extra money? The MSI mobo is pretty sexy and has some nice features... still.

If Gaming 3 vs Ranger, Gaming 3 for the value.

No getting a rog board is stupid unless you are gonna ultilize all of its features, the fact that you are asking this question means there is a high chance that you will not, either get the gaming 3 or the gigabyte z97 sniper, whichever is cheaper where you are, both are great boards.

The ROG boards are nice, extremely sexy, easy to overclock on, handle heat really well and the audio is great.

whether or not it's worth the extra money is up to you

Asus seem to do the software utilities better than the other guys, but a $150 and a $500 motherboard will perform the same, so buy based on features/value-adds/looks.

I mean, don't get me wrong. The ROG boards are good boards, but they don't offer compelling value against the competition.

I'd take the MSI gaming 3 or 5 over the Z97 ROG boards.

ROG boards are good, but the price isn't justified anymore because of offerings from other companies.

Just built my Dad on a Gaming 7 (and he doesn't game, going with onboard graphics) and we saved a bunch avoiding the ROG crap. The overclocking on MSI is easier IMHO, and God the onboard audio quality just kicks Asus' butts all over the place (if you have the Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic sound systems and audiophile ears to here the difference, and we are a musical family). For recording Asus somehow wins, but for playback MSI all the way. He works on big data sets as an actuary, project manager, and analyst, so we wanted the SATA ports without the extra cost of ASUS. So far, no qualms, and it's a system which is supposed to last him a decade (4790k). We wonder if Broadwell will even come to desktop, or if there will be a 5790k with an even higher clock rate than 4.4 GHz (only reason we didn't go with the 4790).
