So was recently given a new PC from my brother (his old one) because I had to sell everything I had while unemployed it's not a bad pc by any stretch but it is a bit old. It's running an I7 960, a rampage III extreme motherboard, GeForce 550 graphics, ram and hd are good 8gb ram and 1tb hard drive.

I was planning on maybe upgrading the graphics card when the new 880's come out assuming they are around the $400 range. My question is should I upgrade the motherboard and processor when I get the money to do so or should I just hold off and wait till I need to before doing so?

I would say something like r9 290 or r9 280. better value.

I'd go for something like 280X or 770, depending on your budget. Also, put a 120GB SSD in there for the OS, it makes a world of difference.

The CPU is still fine for modern games, it's still got a fair bit of life left. If you can wait, an 880 might be a good idea. It looks like it's going to be a very good value card if the rumours are true.

Welcome to the LTT forums :) .

No you are going to be fine for gaming, streaming and surfing with the i7 960. Just upgrade the GPU. If you want to wait for the GTX880 finr but I doubt it will cost only 400 USD.

If you want a good GPU now buy a R9 290. Good and fast card. If you want an nVidia I´d wait until the 800 series get launched and then buy a used GTX780 or GTX780 Ti.

Intel i7 7820X (delidded) @ 4.9GHz - MSI X299 M7 ACK + EKWB Fullcover Block - G.Skill Trident Z 32GB @ 3466MHz - nVidia Titan Xp + EKWB Fullcover Block @ 2.1GHz - Samsung 960Pro 2x - WDD Blue 2TB - Seasonic 750W Platinum - modded Corsair 600C - Hardtubed Custom Watercooling

Thanks for the suggestions, I will hang on to everything but the GPU as long as I can and for the GPU it's not bad but it's showing it's age a bit with some games. I think i'll wait and see what the price on the 880's look like and go from there. Hopefully we'll hear about it at gamescom.
