Hi guys,

Im going to be setting up a new rig on the 3rd floor of my house (Basement + 2 floors)

and my routers in the basement and I can't relocate it. I'm torn between using a Wifi booster or repeater or a powerline adapter. Which do you guys think will work the best in this case?

powerline.  just be sure you put it on the correct circuit of the house. so you will need to know a little about how your house is wired up.

the second best option is going to be  AC wireless as long as your not going through huge lumps of concrete.

otherwise you can go with just normal wireless N and maybe stick a repeater in the middle.    Depends on how bothered you are about speeds and how much you want to spend

The biggest advantage of Powerline adapter is don't need rewiring. The terminal Just plug in the power,and can achieve Internet access.
It can replace the wireless router. Powerline adapter incorporates many 802.11N wireless technology and HomePlug AV powerline communications technology to achieve the best wired or wireless coverage.Plug the power line adapter into a socket, it can achieve at least two devices wired Internet access, while its wireless features but also to meet mobile phones, computers and other equipment wireless Internet access.

It may need some pro technology, but it would be a good idea.

General rule of thumb, start at the top and go for the first one that fits the bill:

- Don't need to be mobile and <5m from a network point? Network cable

- Need to be mobile and/or are well within wireless range but not close enough to be wired? Wireless

- Have walls between you and the AP and it's a temp/difficult location? Use Powerline

- Want something permanent and want as much speed as possible? Run a network cable through the walls

So whats the best brand out there for a powerline adapter? And will it be encrypted?

Will the speeds be the same for both of them? How much would a unit like that cost and will it be encrypted?

Personaly I would choose this one.  1000+ 5* ratings on amazon.  also has 128-bit AES encryption   and you get 3 ports on the device.

This one will give you more speed, significantly despite the naming convention, and you can always add a switch at either end later:

AV200 -> 40Mbps

AV500 -> 70Mbps

AV600 -> 140Mbps
