I've been having a few problems with my R9 290 for a while. Occasionally when playing games my PC will just shut off and restart. I thought it had something to do with the games I was playing, as when playing Dead Space it was at particular points where it would shut down (when accessing the save station, mostly). But today Tomb Raider made it shut down, and last week Sims 3 made it shut down a few times too, after leaving menu screens... Would this sound like a problem with overheating?

I've tried to check my temps before, but the card is really good at cooling down after tabbing out of a game, so I can't check quickly enough and end up seeing it in the high 70s to low 80s.

I always have my window open in my room and occasionally have the door open too. My PC is on a wooden plank so air can get under it. I've moved it a little further away from the wall recently as well. If this is a problem with overheating, what are my options for fixing it? Would buying more fans be a good idea? I currently have just the two stock fans in my Corsair case, one at the front and the other at the back.

Any help would be appreciated! :)

could be the PSU being unable to power everything  nvm, 750w should be plenty

Sounds like a shit rather sub-par PSU to me or an unstable OC if you have one.

I have an EVGA 750W PSU. I haven't OCed it at all...

could be the PSU being unable to power everything  nvm, 750w should be plenty

maybe a loose connection?

I've tried replugging, it hasn't fixed it. I could try a different rail on the PSU if it has one... Any idea where to find that?

Try downclocking the memory from 1250 to 1100. My 290 has memory issues similar to what you described. Try that and see if it fixes it.

I had the exact same problem with toombraider. The game just crashed all the time. Sometimes even minutes after launch. You may want to lower your clockspeeds, as that helped me. Or amp up your voltage. This slightly fixed it. But all out of nowhere a new driver uppdate rolled out, and that fixed it, and everything is back to normal. So check for driver uppdates, that helped me ;)

I'll give that a go, thanks :)

That doesn't make it immune to failure.

You're saying I could have a faulty unit? These are the specs for the PSU on this website http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=110-B1-0750-VR

After I can figure out where rails are on the PSU and it doesn't fix it (which it hopefully does) I'll try that. I'd really hate to underclock it... I guess I can get an RMA though.

I have the latest drivers, unfortunately I still have the problem...

Get MSI Afterburner and go to settings, enable OSD (on screen display) and put in all the information you want to see while gaming. For me it became standard to monitor important things while gaming.

I've been keeping an eye on it playing Dead Space 3. I've maxed the fan speed and it's running at a constant 83 Celsius. Hasn't crashed once yet... It had to be when I wanted it to, didn't it? :/

Maybe you can try to optimize your airflow for better cooling.. cable management etc - brought me 5°C less on the GPU under load. Or maybe take back your overclock a little so the card runs cooler.

Well this is the inside of my case:

14137478610_b1c535251c_c.jpg

I don't think I can do too much more about cable management...

As for overclocks, I don't have one on the card. I'm going to try the other Dead Space games now. The original was notorious for crashing on my PC...

yeah, your cable management looks pretty good already and it seems that air can flow quite easy through the case..

maybe consider another intake fan at the bottom?

Regarding the overclock - i was just reading your signature "MSI R9 290 @ 1GHz" so that's a small factory overclock i guess. You could reduce it anyway if nothing else helps.

Unfortunately i myself don't have a R9 290, so i have no experience myself. But you wrote "end up seeing it in the high 70s to low 80s", which should far away from the danger zone for your gpu - iirc the R9 290 is designed to run at 95°C, so you still should have quite some headroom for the card and even then it should start throttling before it crashes. Please try again running the card normally with the standard fancurve and check how high the temps go when playing and where it crashes, because i guess when the temperature should be the reason it crashes, that would be a case for RMA.

I've just been playing Dead Space (original) for the last half an hour and with the default fan curve it's been at 83 degrees with a peak of 87 at 60% fan speed. It did crash once and at that point the GPU temp was, according to Afterburner, 45 degrees at 18% fan speed....

Okay, so i guess we can eliminate the temperature as a problem here then. Did you check your RAM already? Maybe try running MemTest and see if your RAM is working as it should. That's what i would do as a next step.

I'll be waiting for your response, probably be checking the forum again in about 2 hours.

I've ran 5 passes of Memtest and there were no errors.
