My brother and dad was talking today and my dad was telling him screen saver extends the life of your PC and my brother saying that it don't matter. I was just wanting to know if it really does help I have always just left mine on but never knew if it helped in any way.

for older computers, it prevented screen burn-in and worked as an alternative to hibernating, because recovering from hibernation took much longer than it does today.

It doesn't really extend the life of PCs nowadays

They're both right...it depends on the monitor in use; CRT yes and LCD no.

It used to... Not too much now, but I've seen "modern" displays with burned-in images, only in computerized kiosks and commercial displays though...

Your standard LCD screen will see no difference in power consumption whether you display a black or a white image. Maybe there are some backlight technologies that turn down the backlight when the image is very dark, but otherwise it makes no difference. Again, with CRT screens that was different. That's why Blackle was a thing (for a very short time), so people wouldn't waste energy with the white google startpage.

Unless it's an OLED which makes some difference...

Screen savers used to have a purpose on CRT screens because still images could burn in. They are 100% irrelevant nowadays.

not true.

Most overclockable S-IPS 1440p panels (Temptest Overlord X270OC, Catleap 2B needs to warm up first to achieve 110Hz+(most can only cold boot at around ~105Hz)

It also prevent the overclockable PLS 1440p panels from suffering image retention.

Yeah, we're all just a bunch of idiots experiencing nothing more than the placebo effect.
