Many people only know prime95 to be a stress test for PCs. However, there is more to it than just that.

Prime 95 is actually a distributed computing project made to find "Mersenne Prime" Numbers.

A Mersenne prime is a Mersenne number that is prime. It is knownthat if 2p − 1 is prime then p is prime' date=' so it makes no difference which Mersenne number definition is used. As of December 2012, 47 Mersenne primes are known. The largest known prime number ((2^43,112,609)− 1) is a Mersenne prime.Since 1997, all newly-found Mersenne primes have been discovered by the “Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search†(GIMPS), a distributed computing project on the Internet.

These prime numbers are huge btw. M - 43112609 has 13 million digits.

Now Prime95 was released for GIMPS.

Interestingly GIMPS is also the first ever distributed computing project.

To find out more you will have to research more yourself as you will find information much faster by browsing than what I can give you.

I thought it was an interesting fact not many people knew about.

And now you know why its called "Prime95" !

EDIT: Forgot to mention thats why the icon for Prime95 is that. It actually reads [(2^p) -1]

hmmmmm i knew that its is a distributed program. and i tried to run a cluster of PC running GIMPS and P95, but could not get it to work. do u have any idea how to do it?

Nope sorry.

To be honest you'd be better off running SETI or folding your or own personal choice of distributed computing.

Looking for prime numbers if useless imo.

If you want to do distributed computing the folding is the way to go. It has very easy to use software for windows.

Pretty cool tbh ^.^ I don't see console users doing all this neat stuff, like prime and folding =P
For console users, from 2007/8 till Nov. 2012, the PS3 had the ability to fold until F@H and/or Sony decided to pull the plug.

Although if you were a power folder during this time, you were probably using a computer anyways as the PS3 could only make about 900 to 1,000 ppd.

Well, you comment is still valid as no console as of now can fold or run any other Distrusted computer task. ;)

Although now that I think of it, When sony had the "Other OS" feature with the PS3, I think there was a few boinc projects that could run on those linux's OS. Sadly though, I was just getting into the F@H area when that feature was removed. So I really didn't spend much time looking into it. :(
