Is SecuROM Dangerious?

So yeah, I recently saw some news articles regarding EA "sneaking" SecuROM into this free version of the SIMS 2, Ive known for a while I have games that use this on my PC but to be honest I haven't really cared until now. All these news articles are going on about it like its a terrible thing so I'm just wondering is this software actually damaging specifically to my computer? Or is it mostly just a principles thing thats getting people so up in arms?

Edit: Cannot spell Dangerous -.-

Can't damage anything.

It's just a nuisance.

If you don't mind something running in the background, monitoring everything you have running then it's fine.

It doesn't cause any kind of damage, but i personally don't like the idea of someone peeking at my pc without my permission.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

I remember reading somewhere that the old version of it could damage CD drives.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/101407-13-securom-games

lots of posts about it.

Rare but they don't take into consideration other facts before it happened.. Were they using their CD drives as cup holders minutes before? People tend to hear something like oh it's securom, so my burned out by itself dvd drive got broken by it... If it was true these would be reproducible and stated by the company but they all seem to be mythical.

SecuROM is not damaging in itself, but it's annoying.

Yes. There are tools to make it less annoying though. I dont know if they are allowed to be linked here though.

Securom was considered a thing of the past at this point. Odd that EA is putting it on free copy of sims 2. Considering they had several class action lawsuit against them over it.

Couple random articles I found in a few minutes on google.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/ea-threatens-to-cancel-spore-accounts
http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/09/19/ea-relents-on-spore-drm-we-need-to-adapt-our-policy-to-accommodate-our-legitimate-consumers/
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2008/11/ea-hit-with-two-more-lawsuits-over-use-of-securom/

There were cases of it damaging hardware, messing up installs of windows. It was more or less a root kit being installed onto your computer. Then there were limit on how many times you could install a game. It was just a piece of crap.

If your going to force drm, steam is the gold standard these days, it more less stays out of your way, and does not try to pull any shit. I prefer GoG's no drm approach and maybe once they rollout their galaxy client and have all of steam quality of life stuff on top of no drm they can start to put the squeeze on valve.
