Is underclocking your GPU when you know you're not going to do anything intense (web browsing, text stuff, videos, etc...) to lower heat and noise, and to use less power worth it? Does it show any difference on idle or under light use? I'd figure a 115 watt gpu would get a tad bit warm, even at idle. (and it kinda does)

They already do it automatically when idle

AMD cards do that's called Zero Core technology

Nvidia cards have a similar feature I believe.

But does it go back to the GTX 5xx series?

Open GPU-Z and see for yourself. I'm sure Fermi based cards downclock themselves as well as change their pci-e bus speed to save power.
