Im planning on building a desk just a simple corner desk, nothing special im not building my rig in it its just a desk. :)

so here it is. (the drawn dimensions arent to scale but the measurements are)

post-7522-0-63815000-1369283735.png

What do you think? the desk is going to be "modular" the reason there is a line in the middle of the desk is because that long part will be able to put it on either side, depending on where my desk will be located. The little blocks that are on the corners are cut outs for cables. and the corner where you sit will be radiused.

Materials:

4ftx8ftx3/4in Hardie pine siding - $29 a sheet

X2 4"x 4"x 8' pine - $9

Dark walnut stain - $13

Pine outside corner molding - $1.80/ft $45

X18 Heavy duty metal Shelf bracket (not just for shelves) - $7 each $125

Assorted Screws (have a lot at my house) - Free

This is what i want the stain to look like

The shelf brackets might be changed and i might make some wooden ones myself to save money.

I will put the legs in the corners, like this

What do you think?

Remember that wood joints can be complicated, and that often the same structural and aesthetic strength can be achieved with some strategic screws and a drill. Other than that, i like the desk. Not too keen on walnut myself, but hey. It'll be slightly thinner than my desk too. Perhaps look into some cloth to protect the surface also.

The desk will have to much weight on it for me to have no joints, and ive made joints before they arent to bad just take some time, the wood isnt mdf though its a much stronger wood. and im gonna put polyurethane on it so the cloth isnt really needed but if i fint that it is i will get one or something :)

Technically it'd be cheaper to have an MDF/chipboard tabletop. And much lighter, just stain it afterwards, or with a cloth nobody would notice.

Joints aren't hard, they're more fiddly complicated, and easily done wrong. It's better to minimise weight and increase durability. Joints can be replaced, but they're costly. Screws, not so much. A cloth is also a great idea if you want to perfectly hide all those cables. It's one thing for a nice desk, but if the cable management it poor and or below average, it'll spoil the look. Perhaps make a custom cable cover to hide wires, and at the same time provide a slightly elevated shelf for items of particular importance to you.

i was looking at mdf board and it around $40 and $50 i just checked today. weight doesnt matter... its a desk and it wont be to bad especially when i take the legs off, the screws for legs like you suggested wont be sturdy enough and it will wobble. ive made a few tables and desks (small ones) and it really helps and is almost needed, its always better to make it stronger than needed than not strong enough.

you will need a brace in between each leg and a centre foot under the join.

you can get away with 2 full legs on each end and a support cleat screwed onto the wall around the perimeter.

yes the support brackets im talking about are triangle supports that will do that, and i dont want it screw it into the wall as i will be going to college in a year or two i want ot to be a free standing piece of furniture.

Looks cool! I wish I had a bigger desk... I might look into building something like that soon.

make sure you pay me royalties ;)

Looks good except for this^. Please, spend the extra money on a box of screws. If you have a left over box that are all the same length, go for it, otherwise you'll regret it when you start picking through piles of old screws for ones that work.

Also, in the center, where you planned for two legs, just use one (Unless you want the two pieces to be able to be separated) . A 4x4 post would work nicely. Another thing, if you don't plan on moving it, I'd suggest simply attaching it to the wall.

no you dont understand, my family does construction so when i mean i have assorted screw i mean i have boxes of pretty much every screw i will need. i want it to separate so ya two posts, and i plan on moving in a year or two so im not gonna mount it to the wall. :D

Haha yeah. Just like in all the livestreams where Linus and Slick ask for 10% commission for any good ideas they come up with.  :D

well we used to just work in construction and the business closed but we are constantly building things and my dad doesnt skimp out on things he always over builds things and i have learned to do the same. always better to over build and have a product that could stop a train than a products that a toddler could break.
