8 is only a touch faster... but by the time you install enough stuff to make it useable, it gets bogged down... I would go for 7

Windows 8 is a bit faster than 7.

and IMO windows 8 is as good or better than windows 7 once you download the right programs and apps like Classic Start, although Metro can be pretty dumb sometimes.

Overall though once you get used to an new OS it doesn't really matter.

W8 if you care about that little extra performance you get in certain things. If you hate the Modern UI, you can install free workarounds to use only the desktop environment.

I actually like W8. Yes, there is a learning curve, but once you get over that, it's virtually W7 with some wild features tacked on. Plus with the Blue patch coming later this year, Microsoft is saying they'll be adding several features to cater to desktop, non-touch users. To what extent that will actually be remains to be seen, but the few notes I've seen do look promising. Just Google "Windows 8.1" or "Windows Blue" if you want a full update list.

Get Linux. You save the money from windows, and linux starts up in 10 sec without ssd bootdrive. Now you have money.
