Xbox One RAM

Jamdude

So they Xbox One claims to have 8GB of DDR3 RAM running on an x86 architecture. I though 32-bit systems could only take 4GB of DDR RAM? Am I getting confused somewhere?

I believe 64 bit CPUs are still based around the x86 architecture. Which is why it's still called x86-64. Also, there are ways to get around that. Can't remember what the name of it is though, but it allows the computer to BIOS the 4GB limit.

But x86-64 is 64-bit isn't it? The console is only x86 or 32-bit.

I think someone will be able answer this clearly. I'm not too sure.

EDIT: Alright. So there's the answer.

x64 = 32 bit. x86 = 64 bit. The Xbox One is an x86 architecture, which is how it was 8GB of GDDR5 ram, I think. The CPU and the Graphics Card share the ram.

Xbox One will feature compatibility with the x86-64 instruction set

x86-64 (also known as x64) is a 64-bit extension of IA-32, the 32-bit generation of the x86 instruction set

What? Sorry, but that's false. x64 doesn't mean 32 bit. I can prove it to you too. I have 7-Zip installed. The 64 bit version.

It's x86-64, so it does indeed support the 8GB of RAM.

It falls on the CPU and Operating System anyway not the RAM. Ram will run either way in 32bit or 64bit, 32bit just has 4GB MAX limitations (which can be overcome with software)

If the OS is coded to be 64bit, it will be 64bit, if a 64bit CPU is running the 32bit OS, it will run in 32bit

No doubt since its the standard now, 64bit is the obvious choice it will be.

I'm almost certain that you got the 64 and 32 bit the wrong way round. x64 is 64 bit and x86 is 32 bit.

Thanks guys, it makes a lot more sense now I know it's x86-64, all the website I read said it was x86 and nothing else.

Reason being (could be) the PS3 used a different type of processor to the Xbox and PC's alike.., and I think they were just oversimplifying a clarification that its now just like PC architecture.

x86 is a 32-bit CPU.

x86-64 is a PATCHED 32-bit CPU with 64-bit instruction support. This was developed by AMD (this is what we all use in our system, to allow both 32 and 64-bit programs to run. Intel pays a patent license fee to AMD for it - well in reality they have a patent agreement... so that AMD can use Intel patent and vise versa without trouble).

x64 is a processor that can ONLY execute 64-bit programs. There is no consumer grade processor for PCs available. It's mostly for research and server purposes, as they run 64-bit code in any case.

The XBox One uses a x86-64 processor. But its refereed as x86, because that is what it is in reality. The "x64" part is a patch.

Also, the XBox One, much like the PS4, it's 8GB is shared. Meaning the GPU will reserve several GB for it. And the rest will be available to the CPU (which the OS will take several GB for itself, and the rest goes for games). So in reality, no much for games. Add your system RAM and GPU RAM together.. sounds impressive no?

DDR3 is the preferred choice for the CPU due to it's low latency. CPU doesn't access large amount of data from the RAM. The great majority of the time, small data at a time is passed from CPU and RAM.

GDDR5 is preferred for the GPU, as the GPU doesn't care about latency at all. All it wants to large bandwidth to access large textures. Also, the GPU needs to access its memory simultaneous read and write. Something that the x86 architecture doesn't support, despite the multi-core design that we have today. GDDR5 support this dual access, but not DDR3. PS4 CPU doesn't access memory simultaneously. If AMD found this ability as a patch on x86 design, trust me, AMD will be out the door with their CPU with it for the consumer market, as such processor will greatly boost program performance, especially multi-core designed programs.

So in other words, if you want to do a XBox One vs PS4 comparison:

-> XBox One will have the GPU that struggles from reaching it's max potential.

-> PS4 will have the CPU that struggles from reaching it's max potential.

The smartest designed, but more expensive, is dedicated memory, like we have in our computers. Why it's not done on console? Because an APU was selected, but also, because its cheaper for both companies, as they get to order much more chips, making the 8GB more affordable.

I heard that the Xbox one runs on X86 with 8Gigs of DDR3, while the PS4 runs the X86 slightly higer clocked with 8 gigs of GDDR5.
Make of it what you want but it seems that the PS4 will be the more powerfull box..yet again.

Well the Xbox One seems to be entirely centred around entertainment such as TV whereas the PS4 should be almost solely focused on gaming.

Yeah ikr, Microsoft shot itself in the foot when it comes to making the gamer and the game the centre-point of the console (from what we know from the reveal) whereas the reveal of the PS4 was indeed about the gamer and games in general.

I would normally get both consoles in a timelapse of 5 years, but since i have no need for a tv-port that looks like a vcr..I'm only going for the PS4 (well that and because I'm a huge fan of the Killzone-series)

I'm not a big fan of the consoles but I'm a bit of a sucker for most things Sony brings out so I'll more than likely be getting the PS4.  I've never owned an Xbox, always been a Playstation fan boy.

well i only had a 360 because a lot of my buds have one, but nearly all of them went crazy over the reveal about how bad it was, some dudes are now even considering getting the PS4 instead.

I know the feeling about Sony dude, 'been playing with the PS since there ever was one :)

I'm not a fanboy of either. I wait till reviews come out to determine whether I should get something or not.

I feel as though consoles are something you get based on what you think will be the best and what you've seen of them so far.  What are some reviews going to say that make you change your mind?  Wait until Sony's press conference the day before E3, check out the console and then make your decision.  You shouldn't need other people to explain about them when they have already been shown off and demonstrated with.

I agree. The games will be the same on all 4 platform (PC, PS4, XBOX One, and WIiU). You buy the console that have the most exclusive game (ie: first/second party games) that interest you the most.

true story, altough some people buy one or both of the consoles just for the exclusives, I will be getting the PS4 because of Killzone and other PS-Exclusives, If it wasn't for those titles being Playstaion-only - I would not even buy a console in the first place because a pc is more powerfull in the firstplace. Still curieus how the thing looks like and what other stuff they have in stock for us at E3.
