Hello Everyone,

So I have been working on a computer build for a few weeks and I have really narrowed it down. I will be gaming and also using blender for 3D modeling. I have two builds that I am trying to decide upon. One is using a GTX 770 and the other an R9 290X. Both have an intel i7-4790k. These are obviously very different builds and in order to fit the 290X build into my price point I had to downgrade a few parts. Here are the PC Part Picker List.

As you can see with the 290X build I only have a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I have a 256GB SSD on the 770 build and a 2TB HDD. My RAM is also slower on the 290X build at 1600MHz instead of 1866MHz. Am I buying too nice of a CPU?

I just want some opinions on if you think I am spending my money in the correct places. I want it to be as upgradable as possible and as (I hate this word) futureproof (it hurts to say that word) as possible.

You might aswell add a H100i to the AMD build for $20, or get a NH-D14/15.

The 290X build is way better IMO

That's not opinion, that's fact.

Spoiler

The 290x build will provide much better performance in the gaming department. If you go with that build, get a better SSD. I recommend getting Windows 8 cheaper from G2A or /r/softwareswap.

Build: CPU: Intel Core i5 4690k | CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo | Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 | RAM: 8GB G-Skill Ares 1600Mhz CL9 | Storage: 120GB Samsung 840 Evo + WD Blue 1TB 64MB Cache + Seagate Barracuda 2TB 64MB Cache | GPU: MSI GTX 960 | Case: Cooler Master Storm Enforcer | Power Supply: EVGA 600B Non-Modular |

I would go for the R9 290X build. For your power supply, if you do not intend to add another graphics card, a 550W will be more than enough to power this system. I would not buy the thermal paste as the paste that comes with the coolers are good enough and buying a different thermal paste may only change the temperatures by a couple of degrees. You could go for a mid tower like the Corsair C70 as it will be able to fit your components unless you want a case that is roomier.

I would honestly drop the SP120s they're not worth

the price (coming from someone who has them)

Why not? I don't know a whole ton about monitors. I have decided to change to a 290 instead of a 290x. $100 cheaper but not much of a loss in power. I can now upgrade a bit. Which parts should I change. Maybe $150 at max can be added to this.

btw that R9 in the build isnt a 290x

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I know that the 290x is much more powerful than the 770, but I had to down grade everything else in order to fit it in my budget.

What are you using the system for? Why are you getting a new system?

If you're sticking with that 5 ms response time, I would suggest getting an IPS monitor, the colors will look much much much better.

Hi Gregg,

I see that you have done a lot of homework on this.  Both systems are very good and based on your needs a high-end GPU is a must.  You didn't mention if you want to overclock your CPU, but from your processor, mobo and watercooler in one of the builds i take it you do wish to oc  ;-)   This is of course a nice to have but not a must.  You could opt not to oc from the start and wait a while untill you can get some more cash.  That way you can skip on the CPU cooler and paste for now.  You can always get the watercooler later in the year.  Instead I would get a 256 SSD. Depenidng on your needs you could start with 1x 1TB HDD en if need be add another 1TB later on (en put them in RAID ;-)

Your 1600Mhz RAM is just fine, not a big difference with 1866Mhz so don't bother paying more for it.  As for your PSU, I agree with mgsstart, you could go with less wattage. You can also wait with the SP fans for now and save another 28$.  See how the computer runs as is and again you add those things later on if need be.

Hope this helps!

Wow nice response thanks! I will take it into consideration. I have $5800 as a budget, but only coming in four installments of $1450, so I want to buy all parts with first payment. I like the idea of not buying h100i just yet. I won't be over clocking initially anyways. Will the stock fan on the 4790k do the job for a month at least?

OK, will the price be the same? Also I will look but could you send me a link to one on PC Part picker, I don't know how to add a filter for IPS. And yes I don't care about the response time. I am use to a 6ms panel so input latency doesn't bother me.

OK, so here is the most updated build,

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zzYvdC

I intend not to buy any peripherals (that includes monitor) until 1 month after because I won't have enough money. I have all the peripherals I need for now. I am also planing not to buy the h100i initially but I might if I have the money. I do plan to buy the NZXT Hue but I may not until a month. Also I am getting windows 8 for 30 bucks from G2A, and I will just download the ISO.

The G2 is a better psu than the NEX. Also 850W will allow a 2nd R9 290.

On the right side of the screen you will find all the filters. Simply scroll down until you see IPS (All, Yes, or No checkboxes). Just one caution, some S-IPS panels get excluded by the filter.
