I installed a new cpu, motherboard, and extra hard drive into a friend's computer... parts are working fine... boot up and Windows asks for a startup repair. I tried starting Windows normally first... didn't work. Went with the startup repair next... it went through all the loading and finally said that it couldn't find a solution.

The problem is that this is a "bad boy" copy of Windows 7 from a couple years back. (I hope I don't get in trouble for saying that but it might help the cause right now.

I think I may need to insert a Windows repair disk... but could I do that with a regular copy Windows disk to repair my bad boy one?

Any help or info is much appreciated. Thank you guys! :)

I think you just found the issue in pirating windows. Buy a legit copy and reinstall.

Just get a new copy of Windows and do a fresh install, I'm pretty sure non-pirated Windows freaks out the same way.

So when we get a legit copy, can I just install and replace all the current Windows files?

(Sorry if Im sounding dumb but I ask a lot of questions.)

Or can I install it to the new hard drive, get into Windows, move over all the important data, then just reformat the old hdd to remove the old Windows?? Will that work?

You probably confused the hell out of your friend's Windows installation by changing the motherboard. The drivers aren't compatible anymore, and that's why it doesn't work. You need something like Paragon Adaptive Restore to fix this issue. I haven't used it myself, so I can't guarantee it to work.

You swapped the motherboard... you need to do a fresh install, because every driver for the old mobo is still on the drive, and the ones for the new mobo are not, so it's freaking out. You could try the repair disk, see if it can fix it (would delete old drivers, and use default ones, so you can install the new drivers). Other than that, fresh install, and preferably a legit copy of Windows. Pirated versions can be full of crap, and you'd never really know.
