Question about ram compatibility

Go to solution Solved by antoainb,

If you make sure you buy another stick that is exactly the same model you'll be fine. Dual kits sometimes are better because it's a guarantee that they'll work well together, but if you have 1 stick already it's not worth it.

I have a stick of corsair vengeance 8gb 1600mhz and I would like to upgrade to 16gb. Can I just buy another corsair vengeance 8gb or do I need to throw my old stick to dumpster and buy a kit of 2 sticks? Will the dual channel work? Will I run into compatibility issues? I tried searching this, but all I found was about dual vs single channel.

just buy another, dual kits are just 2 sticks of the same stuff, there is nothing special about them

Dual channel kits will be validated to work with each other. Buying two separate dimms might not work but the chances are slim. I've run RAM from different brands in dual channel before.
