Well, what kind of server? If it's some storage server and media server, I think a AMD APU would work really well, especially since you won't need a GPU.

You can look at these APUs from AMD; http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007671%20600166681%20600372026&IsNodeId=1&name=Trinity

If the server isn't doing anything demanding then a dual core would do fine;

You also can choose and overclock one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113282

Or the non-overclock one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113283

I have been thinking about the A8 because it seems to be a good alround CPU. It is more than a need, but I dont want to upgrade anytime soon and would like to be sure I have enough power.

probably going with something like that if I ever have the money. :)

thanks!

AMD apu for sure. I have an A10-5700 in my media pc running xbmc running flawlessly. I decided to go with trinity instead of llano because playing steam games on a big screen tv is pretty cool. And while it is faster than Llano, it has the same 65W TDP.

Main rig: i7 3770K @ 4.54, Sapphire R9 290, Sabertooth Z77, 16 GB Mushkin Redline 2133, Lian Li PC-P50R, Seasonic 860xp Platinum, Kingston Hyper X 3K 240GB

freeNAS server: AMD Athlon II 170u 20W, 5 x 3TB WD Red in raid-z1 (12 TB)

media centre: AMD A10-5700, crucial M4 (boot), running XBMC,4 x 3TB WD Red, 3 x 3TB WD green + 2TB green in FlexRAID (17 TB)

For a media PC and such the trinity CPUs are definitely a good idea. For my own server I am running much heavier stuff on it, (Minecraft server) So i purchase the FX6100, fair to say its a beast, and only costed £200 total with a few older parts, we took an educated decision and purchased a new PSU to protect out server though, we didn't fel safe using an old 300W PSU http://pcpartpicker.com/b/yBb
