My GPU (AMD Radeon 7970) randomly started overheating and maxing out performance while playing some games today that never happened before.

I use MSI Afterburner and the temps were around mid 80s with the GPU usage at 95% just playing Fifa 13 on low settings. Nothing else was running in the background and

I checked the gpu fans to make sure they were all working. My fans are set at auto and usually 40% fan speed kept my gpu at around 65c, but now I have to put them

up to 80% just to keep the gpu temp around 70. Anyone know what's going on?

Could be driver problems. If you're on a beta, try uninstalling and installing a whql driver. If that doesn't work, try applying new thermal paste. If all else fails, do an RMA

How long do you have your GPU? Maybe you need to apply new thermal compound. And what HD 7970 do you have exactly? Maybe it's just because the weather became so warm? (Don't know where you live but here in Germany it was very hot already)

Have you changed any of the clock speeds and/or the voltage?

No I haven't acquired any new games or software recently.

Sorry, I'm actually very new to the "computer world" haha. Where can i locate the whql driver? I bought this computer off of craigslist with a friend's recommendation so I don't think an RMA is possible

Not very long! The weather out here is getting really warm so I was assuming that was the problem, but it's been a continuous problem all day even with my house being room temperature. I haven't changed any of the clock speeds or voltage either because I'm new to computers and don't mess with that stuff haha. It's just a AMD Radeon HD 7970 from the 7900 series.

I was speaking about the manifacturer (Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Sapphire, ...) and the cooler. If you don't know it maybe you could take a photo? Because if it's the reference cooler temperatures about 80 degrees after some months are not suprising.

I just thought I was ask, some less than honest uploaders sneak coin miners into the "acquired" software and seeing as you own an AMD GPU it seemed logical to assume something like that happened.
