So, I think I'm gonnna take the chance and upgrade to an intel motherboard and cpu. My total budget is 400, but I want to save as much money as I can. Any issues that anyone can see with this pair?

(Edit: I say take the chance because I'm not buying a new windows install)

Intel Core I5-4590

Advice welcome, I don't really care about overclocking, turbo will be just fine. Use will be schoolwork for networking security, and heavy gaming (heavy if I can get the $$ together to get a decent monitor, current monitor is a 720p so not a challenge for any computer to power lol)

Is it really worth the extra money though? Just doesn't seem like much of a performance increase (I'm only judging by ghz, if I'm missing something please tell me)

In reality we're probably talking like a 5% difference, it's up to you if it's worth it. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4690-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4590

5% overall? or 5% in gaming or 5% in multi tasking?

God if I just had an extra like, 100 bucks I'd get a 4790 locked and just be ballin

The only difference is the clock speed range. Only you can decide if the 5% - 6% performance boost is worth the 12.5% higher price. If the money is there I would tend to go for it only because more power equates to longer useful life.

5% in general.

So the only difference, literally, is the clock speed? Interesting. Why a 12% increase in price for only a 5% increase in speed, when all they have to do is set the clock speed slightly higher? (I assume, not sure if there's an actual physical difference between the 2 that allows for higher clock speed)

In a word "profit". All the i5 chips (and likely all Haswell i3/5/7 chips) are the same physical chip. Due to variances in manufacturing some chips can reliably run faster than others. Intel sorts them out in a process called binning and charges what the market will bear for each increment.

So theoretically, you could taking something like the 4590 and modify it (internally, like if you had super duper awesome access to equipment that I probably can't even name) to run at the same speed as the 4690, assuming you used sufficient cooling?

I'm probably gonna go with the 4690 anyways just because. Right now I'm waiting for some stuff later this week, If I end up getting more money I'll probably say fuck it, save for 3 or 4 weeks, and get a 4790k. Just waiting the outcome of some shit related to my recent job loss. *fingers crossed*

Thanks for the advice guys

If you search this site and others you will find a discussion about people claiming to have bumped i5 to i7 through a microcode adjustment. It is theoretically possible. But the usual reason a chip is usually put in a particular bin is because it did not pass all of the tests to qualify it for a higher bin.

Good luck with the job stuff.
