So i have a AMD HD 7970, and when i first built my PC back at the end of November, it would idle at about 29 Degrees Celsius (84.2  Fahrenheit) Which I thought was normal. now in the summer With the outside temp about 20 - 30 degrees Celsius, my GPU idles at about 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) with my GPU fan at 50%

Is this a normal/safe temperature?

Thanks!

50C is pretty high for an idle temp. Try cleaning the heatsink of dust and if it's still high try replacing the thermal paste.

how would i go about doing that?

You might also look at the area behind the system to see if anythings blocking it. On one of my systems I had a while back, I had a 48*C idle and it was because of a box I shoved under my desk working its way behind the case and restricting airflow. Oops.

I have a blue wall about 2" behing my PC, possibly be that?

Can of air to get the dust, unscrew the cooler and replace the paste like normal.

Can of air sounds easy enough, Unscrewing the cooler however, might have to get someone to hold my hand whislt doing that;) Thanks :-)

It's easy, just don't chuck the card at a wall and it'll survive.

Hahaha okay thanks:-)

Hate to quote a quote....but as most have stated, use a can o' air for your card. Remove the card from your case to have better access to all sides of the heatsink and fan (s).  Re-install and enjoy the fresh hot air being removed by your fans and lower temps :D

I had a similar issue with my 7950. Are you running multiple displays off of the card? I was, and when I unplugged the second and plugged it into my iGPU, the temps dropped from about 50 C to the mid 30s.
