So I am a little confused.  I do all of my video editing in windows movie maker.  I have an I7-2600K @ 4.5GHz and 8GB of ram and it renders pretty damn fast.  Am I missing something, I thought this required a ton of power?

Specs: Core I7-2600K @ 4.5GHz @ 1.35V, 4x4GB Corsair Vengeance Black 1600MHz CL9, Cooler Master Evo 212, MSI Z77 Mpower Motherboard, Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-X @ 1000/1400, Cooler Master HAF 932 Blue Edition w/ 3 Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 120MM fans (2 up top 1 in the bottom) replaced side panel with a window, and rear fan with a Cougar Hydraulic Bearing 140MM, Cooler Master GX 650 80+ Bronze PSU, Samsung DVD-RW, Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD, Seagate 750GB SATA III 7200RPM

My first video took maybe a minute or 2 and it was 15 minutes and originally 15gb compressed down to 100mb.

Seems like a reasonable amount of time.

So realistically an I5 might take 20-25% longer to render, then honestly even a 5 minute render isn't that bad, is it really worth spending a TON of money on an editing machine to save 2-3 minutes/video?  I guess if you have 1,000 videos it can.

Yeah, if you do it on a daily basis, the time can really add up. So, the money on an editing machine could actually end up saving you money, as in time, down the road.

It is when file sizes/length, etc. are increased. When it is done as a job, the saved time can quickly accumulate.

5 extra minutes per videos for 1000 videos = 5000 minutes

5000 Minutes = 83 Hours

83 hours = 3.5 days.

Thats's alot of time wasted.

This is Windows Movie Maker.  I remember I use to make some videos on there really quick but now I have Sony Vegas and requires horsepower.  Try Sony Vegas or other video editing software since you have only tried Windows Movie Maker and you'll see a difference

Other programs might take longer due to their complexity of the program and the amount of what's happening in the project.

Rendering out into an image sequence takes a long time because each frame is a high quality TIFF or PNG or JPG image.

A program like after effects with several image sequences, several audio layers and controls adjusting them, with several effects and masks, and other stuff moving would create a fairly long render time.

Depends on the video, a normal video will render quite quickly, where's a video that has been through premier and after effects with editing on it takes much longer to render.

Come and join the awesome Official LTT Star Citizen Org at LTT Conglomerat,  GTA 5 LTT Crew at LTT Conglomarate

Ya, I am working on getting that.  If my give away generates enough traffic I will invest in it.  My summer build will be PERFECT for video editing with 16GB of ram :)
