GPU clock speed going down?

Go to solution Solved by dragoon20005,

it was 50 degrees during unigine

ah that mean your CPU, mobo and GPU are fine

the bottleneck may really be the HDD

I think you might want to get a better HDD or a 120GB SSD and do a fresh install of the OS with the games

and see how it goes from there.

So i got my gtx 780 sc ACX yesterday, and im totally new to high tier graphics cards and overclocking, i was too scared of overclocking before now, but i feel the 780 is a beast and can handle it.

so after looking around a fair bit and checking the linustechtips overclocking data i have set my 780 to
+300 on mem +125 on clock speed and to 1193mV (its like +31 or something.) all using EVGA precision. now i have 2 questions for all those who are familiar in the field of over clocking,

1. why does it not feel as if im getting any better frame rates, are these too low? or does over clocking really not do that much, also id expected the GPU temps to go up but they have not, like at all, am i doing something wrong?

2. i'm playing far cry 3, why is it that the clockspeeds seem to go down when im in places i obviously need boosts? (EX if im out in the jungle ill get around 65-70 fps then when im in a town ill get 35-40  which is obviously expected but the clockspeeds go down with the fps aswel?)

any help will be greatly appreciated i'm also sorry if a came off as a total newfag, but the truth is, i am.
Thanks in advance :)

does this situation happen with other games?

have you install the latest drivers?

Try with Unigine Benchmarks and see the clock speed with EVGA Precision

Overclocks do not dynamically adjust to in game scenarios. If the power target is reached, your card will throttle back the core clock...same applies to heat (80 is the throttling temperature).

ive been playing farcry all day, ill try skyrim and unigine and get back to you.

i have the latest non beta drivers i believe! would it pay to get the beta drivers?

well i did hear about that throttling thing, but the card so far has not gone above 60 degrees, also the clock speed is down to like 324 when im not in game, is it supposed to do that? i also set the power target to 106% and temp target to 95 degrees.

stick to the official tested version

beta drivers may be out whack at times

download GPU-Z ID and use it in tandem with Unigine and watch the GPU load

didn't ask just now but what are your PC specs?

Ok, so you eliminate the throttling variable. As for the clock speed lowering outside of games; that is normal unless you're using k-boost in Precision X.

okay, so it didn't seem to happen in skyrim, however i was a little dissappointed to find i dropped below 30 fps whilst using some town and village enhancement mods (in whiterun) ill do that gpu laod monitoring as soon as unigine (valley) is done downloading,

PC specs are:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 @ 3.5Ghz

GPU: EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX

RAM: 8GB G.SKILL ripjaws 1600 memory

HDD: dunno some crappy 320gb seagate thing.

Mobo: Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P

as i mentioned above the clock speed isnt changing when the fps lowered in skyrim like it does in farcry, does this say anything to you?

it may look like your HDD is causing the problem

it loading the maps

thus the drop in fps

REALLY?? the HDD of all things??

all right, i ran unigine what did you want to know from it?

See if the fps will jump like crazy

and check the GPU loads and the GPU clock speed when it is running Unigine

Unigine valley benchmarks extreme HD preset

MIN fps: 19

AVG fps: 59

MAX fps 94

average load was about was about 95% and clock speed was 1110

do you see the gpu load jumping or spiking?

might need to see the graphs

yes, actually i do how do i retrieve these graphs?

a simple printscreen and paint should do

just attach the pic in the full reply

sorry it took such a long time, i had to go do something else.

the chunk in the middle is where i was running the unigine benchmark.

yea it does look like your HDD is holding you back one way or another

what about CPU and VRMs temps when Unigine was running?

CPU hovers at around 42 degrees.

where can i check VRM temp?

you can use HWMonitor

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

sorry we have to take things step by step

edit this can read VRM temps

wait, is it just GPU temp?

i was referring to the mobo VRM temps

sorry wasn't clear

If the HDD causes any issues, I'd install a program like Aida64 to benchmark/stress test all components one by one.

And even with higher end GPU's you'll see FPS jumps even in 1080p 60Hz.

The GTX780 ACX comes out of the box with a mild OC and what you tweaked was not much. Don't expect to see 20+ more FPS from mild OC's. My GTX780 Ti is hard overclocked from 980 mHz to 1416 mHz and still I don't gain more than 30% raw power. It helps you to get a bit (depending on how far you OC... or how far your silicon is able to OC) more juice and some more FPS, but things like Unigine Valley/Heaven are extrem tests, I think you might benefit more in games from your OC (unless your are a more hardcore OC guy).

What PSU are you runnung if I may ask?

Your throttling doesn't come from temp spikes. But there could be indeed a bottle neck in your system.

alright then so where abouts in AIDA64 would i find the VRM temps?

its the motherboard temps

im an absolute casual at most of this stuff.
