Fan splitter question

I was under the impression that you could plug a 3 pin fan into a 4 pin or am i wrong because if so why have a 3 pin y splitter and a 4 pin one

They do work.

Does that mean there is no reason to get the 3 pin or do 4 pin fan connectors work on a 3 pin header thing?

If you can't afford 4-pin PWM fans or if you want to use a 3-pin fan controller.
