I know a bunch of people here have been screwing around with the new Pentium and I will soon be joining the club. What I want to know is if anyone has tested to see if using the iGPU in some way limits the OC potential of this little guy.

It looks like temperature and power delivery to the CPU does not seem to be a significant OC limiting factor, but I was curious about the iGPU's impact none the less. Basically, 5450s sometimes go on sale for like $10 and I wonder if offloading the display to a cheap discrete card like that might be beneficial.

I know Kaveri is an entirely different ball game, but I do remember topics describing some sort of CPU throttling when running the CGN portion of the APU maxed out; this general concept is what got me wondering about the Pentium.

Any thoughts or real world experiences?

i used the igpu to start with and it didn't make any noticable difference in the oc of the cpu. if you are running gpu benchmarks it might make a difference.

Okay cool. I figured any difference would be minor, but wanted to hear from someone exactly like you with loads of experience. I guess a CPU only benchmark will not be taxing the iGPU anyway, being in a low power 2d mode. If trying to play games or run CPU/GPU benchmarks like Firestrike with the iGPU, however, I would expect some sort of limitation to manifest.

Thanks for the reply, I doubt I will be hunting down any $10 graphics cards anytime soon :)

Oh btw, is the iGPU section of the G3258 unlocked? The only bios I have ever used with recent Intel chips are all Dell oem boards that have literally zero user functionality so I have no idea what type of control to expect. Thanks Jumper!

Oh I have had it sitting here, I just honestly have been hung up on the OS thing. I spent $100 for 8.1 on this AMD machine and that makes me feel gross and dirty... I will not do the same for that little test rig.

I know G2A has cheap keys, but I was also considering W7 because I guess HWbot does not allow 8.1 for submissions (wtf is that all about I wonder). I signed up for HWbot because I saw the LTT group and thought it would be fun to be on a team, only to find out none of my results can be submitted :(

The only thing I need for that test system is OS and RAM. RAM is easy, I was thinking of finding a cheap 2x2 kit for dual channel and calling it good. I can always "borrow" an 8GB stick out of this AMD system if I want (one of the reason I went for 16GB in the first place).

Total system cost is only about $220 or so if I do buy the RAM, so trying to justify any OS purchase has really slowed me down:

-CPU/mobo $100

-EVGA 430W 80+ $20

-whatever 2x2 ram kit $40-$45

-1TB WD blue $50

-All items are new!

You can see my dilemma. I simply don't make enough money to afford a full price OS for this thing and then be able to sleep at night. If I could, I'd be dicking around with a 4960x and not the Pentium lol but unfortunately, I cannot. Maybe I should try a Linux distro, but my computering skills are pretty basic and in turn makes that a little intimidating.

Sweet, I figured that was likely to be the situation.

I'm really looking forward to the mobo box mounted, wires all over the place, kitchen table consuming style bench bonanza!

Welcome to the overclocking addict club!

Also the iGPU enabled might decrease the actual CPU overclockability due to the extra heat as you suggested, but probably not by much as it's only 10 shaders.

that is lucky. i've got the same copy of a dell oem win 7 on 3 pc's that i got for £45 when windows 8 had just come out :P. its not even activated on my main rig. it just means i have to get a new wallpaper every 10 mins

Oh really?!?! I didn't realize this was an option. Okay so now I am getting excited again...I could throw this thing together in 10 minutes lol

What exactly are the limitations of a "non-activated" OS? Can I go online without issue or should I keep it unplugged and load programs off of a usb stick or something? I would love to not spend any money for an OS for a "computer" that is a jumble of wires on a cardboard box.

Windows updates and watermark

That's it? WTF that fires me up! Who cares about security updates on a system that has no important data on it! Holy smokes that is so cool, I guess I will decide if I want to go 2x2GB on the RAM or steal a dimm from the AMD system while I am in CA over the next couple days hanging with my bro. When I get back I will fire that thing up and see if I got a decent sample!

Side note: Thanks a lot guys for answering my simple questions, I really do appreciate it. I am just in a weird corner of knowledge for someone in their 20's. I never was into tech/PC stuff growing up, just cars. I don't have a smart phone and never signed up for myspace/FB/Twitter/G+ or anything like that. Because of this I am super noob with some stuff, but have a very low level understanding of how lots of systems work which is why I am finding overclocking and PC hardware in general to be so enjoyable.

^A primary example of this was building the 8320 rig last week. I had never installed a PC component or opened up a case before then, but it took about 3 hours from starting to open boxes to finishing cable management (I even tested RAM/cpu/mobo on the box before I got started in the case). In comparison, posting a quick build log here on LTT took me about 6 hours of frustration because I had a hard time figuring out spoilers and inserting pictures into them. I literally had to walk away and start over the next day. It took me so long to post the log that I had to change "this morning" into "yesterday" and the timeline was all goofed lol.

Thanks guys, you rock!

Hehe, I started getting interested in PCs when I was 10 or 11 because we had no money to get our piece of sh*t dell fixed so I'd kind of have to fix it myself, built my first PC back in 2009 when I was 12 (iirc) and have been learning since :D

Congrats on 100 posts :P

Hmmm, I guess you should be careful if you ever need to change the oil or some spark plugs on a car in a few years...you might experience full on role reversal and start building the fastest cars in Lincoln :o (not that I have the fastest car in my area I'm just joking around :) )

I guess thanks on the 100 lol, I'm sure I'll be around for a while!
