4 way sli doesn't really scale well. You would get way better performance with a quad sli (2 way with 2 dual gpu's) than with 4way sli

The optimum max number of GPUs for scaling is 3 in SLI, 2 is the norm though.

usually yes but it's not an exact science... the major reason why is most motherboards will turn Pcie lanes into 8x 8x 4x and 4x mode and 4x mode may bottleneck some cards with Quad more of it happens directly in card

4 way sli doesn't even scale after like 3 cards. 2 dual gpus plus one gpu is a win in my opinion though
