Hello,
#1:
I have a FX 8320, with 2x7950, Asrock 970 Extreme 3 R2.0. I am a complete noobie at overclocking, and by guessing I got it to 4.5GHZ with a Be Quiet Shadow Rock 2 CPU Cooler and it goes up to 59C -+3C. So I'm worried that since I'm a noob I will lower the life span of my CPU by alot, so I ask here for advice. Is 1.4125V too much? I got it to work at 1.3875 (or something like that), it ran BF3 just fine at 60fps when I spawn and then I got ~90-110fps. But the problem is that in prime 95 It says illegal sumout on a couple of the cores. It still says that on 1.4125V but I just decided that it does not matter since BF3 works for me. I left the FSB on auto, the NB stock, and everything else on auto, because I had no idea what they did. Should I lower my Voltage to 1.3875 (I think it was that), change any of the other settings (FSB, NB, etc.) or keep it at this or even give it more power?
Please help me and tell me the best settings for me to run it at 4.5GHZ at the best settings.
Please note CPU and motherboard longevity is important for me as I do not wish to upgrade my PC for at least 5 years, that's why I did crossfire.
#2:
Also the reason I OC in the first place was because the FX 8320 bottlenecked my 2 cards and did not let them run at max usage, and I found that 4.5GHZ was the best and I don't need to push higher.
#3:
Does the FSB and PCI speed make my CPU communicate with my GPUs faster giving me more FPS and higher usage in games?

Thanks, and sorry for the long paragraph!

overclocking on the Asrock 990FX extreme 3 with only 4+1 powerphase, and not the best quality vrm´s can be a bit tricky.

The core failures you get, can probably be related to your motherboard, which causing voltage throttle.

Its a well known issue with these boards if you trow a FX 8 core on it.

1.4V is at the point where you start to make a significant impact on the life of the CPU. Try to keep it under 1.4.

Dont OC on that board. It has almost no VRM cooling its only a 4+1 so you will get lots of Vdroop.

on another note I run my 8350 (higher binned 8320) @ 1.475v and have done for a year or so. people say its safe to 24/7 at 1.5v But jsut remember more voltage =  alot more heat.

Quack 🦆

I have to OC, because it bottlenecks my GPUs if I don't. So that's why I'm asking for the best way to do it.

Okay, how can I check if the voltage is enough.

Lower it, then stress test with AIDA 64 or Prime95 for a few hours.

1.4V is nothing for an AMD CPU.

But the problem that "op" has, is most likely related to his motherboard.

like i said above ;)

Can I fix that Motherboard problem, because in games like BF3, I get all the cores working it just seems to be prime 95...

Ah you right its the 970 extreme 3, but its also the same story.

Can you fix it? well i think the only way to fix, is buying a decent motherboard.

like the Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0

You could offcourse try to trow a fan towards the vreg, but i think it would still thorttle.

Where is the vreg. I tried AIDA 64  and it said hardware fail, test stopped! Why is this my CPU temp was 60C?

It's at 1.4V at  4.5GHZ But I have issues, I'm afraid that it will break. Is this true?

the volts are fine so yes it wont break

The problem seems to be the motherboard when it comes to OC stability. If it's bottlenecking in games I'd just sell it in a bundle and move to... alternative platforms rather than throw money at it.

But good AMD boards are:

  • M5A99FX Pro r2.0
  • 990FX-UD3 Rev4
  • 990FX Sabretooth

You should be able to get a lower OC with less volts, try 4.3ghz @ 1.35v
