Hi guys.

My PC died on me recently. Luckily I have some cash coming in so I am going to buy a whole new system. I am going to be playing at 1440p. CPU I was thinking along the lines of the i7-4970k. The monitor I am getting has G-sync which I know I wouldn't really need if I get some 780ti sli etc Its just a future proof thing really.

Now about the Vram thing. Is 3 gigs of Vram enough for 1440p? I have looked around on forums and its super hard to tell or feel safe in my next purchase. Obviously nobody knows what The Witcher 3 specs will be but I fear it will want more than 3 gigs Vram. I also dont really want to go with ATI cards as my monitor will have G-sync and I know physx gets some hate but I do enjoy it personally. Also I know for the moment games don't really use 3 gigs. Watch Dogs just seemed to have rubbish optimization. I am just worried as the games being developed shift towards the ps4 and xbox1 that the specs will increase.

I don't really want to wait for the 880 series I really need my PC soon. If the Vram will become an issue then maybe a switch to ATI is on the cards so to speak.

Some insight and knowledge on the subject would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

For right now, 3GB is enough for 1440P, but in a year or two you'll have to start turning some settings down in AAA games.

Its enough for *almost* every game right now. But for the future probably not.

A 290 would be better for that purpose but you'd lose g-sync.

yeah I am getting the ROG Swift monitor. A couple of the reviews I have read say the TN panel used is amazing maybe not as good as IPS etc but I play games mainly so some color sacrifice is ok for a great gaming monitor. That is what I thought. You guys think I should go with a R9 290x over 780Ti just for the ram? In an ideal world I would like the card to last me a couple years before upgrading, The G-sync was a bonus on the monitor even though you are paying for it :P I just really want to game at 1440p. I tried the cheap Korean monitors that you can overclock but I had all sorts of issues. G-sync only really helps when your fps is in that 40fps range anyway. Hope to avoid that with some crossfire or SLI.

Thanks for your help so far.

stick with the GTX780 6GB SLi combo

it will be way better than one 780Ti

3GB VRAM is the deal breaker for the GPU especially for 4K gaming

I wont go for 4k gaming hey. Maybe in a good few years.

well by the time you going for 4K gaming

the GTX780 can be replaced with another powerful GPU then

but for the swift monitor

you will need 2 GPUs to push up to 144Hz/FPS at 1440P

if you go for AMD, you wasted the money on a G-Sync mod which you never use
