To use linux as your NAS OS, you're going to have a lot of patience and you're going to have to want to learn new things

I have an old computer with Windows XP on. Now I want to make it into use. I have seen the videos by NCIX and Linus himself with Windows Home Server. But, I want to try to minimize price by using Linux.

Questions:

  1. Can a Linux Server be made for a NAS server?
  2. If so, can Windows computers use the NAS
  3. How to access it from the Windows computer? (Is it just like the file server on Windows Home Server?)
  4. More importantly, how to actually make it?
