Linux is very open in the sense that nothing is hidden from you. Got an error message? You can try running the program in verbose mode to read the what's happening under the hood via logs. Still not helpful? You can check out the source code, or ask online. Chances are, people have gone to the same position as you (unless you are doing very niche things). In Windows or Mac, you are only given vague error codes that often leads to nowhere. A simple example is when you have troubles connecting to Wifi. In Linux, it might tell me that the Network manager Service had not been started, or that my WiFi card is disabled on a hardware level, or something else entirely, but I am not hidden from the truth. In Mac or Windows, you are simply shown that your WiFi settings are being reset in a magic black box and it suddenly works. If the automatic resetting doesn't work, you're basically stranded without a clue what to fix. The automatic wizardness may be an advantage for those who are not tech savvy and/or aren't willing to sacrifice some time to learn these things (eg in an enterprise environment), but I find learning these to be the most valuable aspect of Linux.

I have hard drives with data on them and I would like to put the data on a homemade server. I already have an old system that I will be using (AMD dual core, 8GB RAM) as the server. However, after watching many videos on using FreeNAS and reading tutorials, I've learnt that it all involves wiping the drives. My question is: how can I use the same hard drives currently filled with data in FreeNAS? If possible, I am trying to find a way to create a NAS without moving the data out of the drive at all. I am open to alternatives to using FreeNAS eg custom Ubuntu server if it would be simpler to set up. Drives 2 × 320GB HDD salvaged from set top boxes 1 × 1TB HDD

I have a 4 year old laptop - the HP Pavillion Sleekbook 15-b003ee to be precise. I do nothing that demanding, just Microsoft Office work and Google Sketchup. However, this thing barely lasts an hour on battery now. I was thinking of replacing the battery on my laptop until my friend suggested me to upgrade my HDD to an SSD. I've heard that SSDs are more battery efficient than their mechanical counterparts. So I'm wondering: how much does an SSD upgrade change in terms of battery life? Should I replace my battery or upgrade my HDD to an SSD?

I built my PC around 2 years ago with an A6-6400k and an MSI A78M-E35 (strict budget at the time). Last year, I added a GTX 750ti. Now, I'm considering upgrading my CPU to a quad core. However, I'm not sure to upgrade, or build a brand new PC instead. The options I'm considering are: upgrade to X4 860k (same FM2+ socket) build new PC based on Skylake (6600k?) or Zen I'm not sure if the jump to DDR4 would be worth the extra 100+ USD. Also, I'm not sure if my 750ti would bottleneck a Skylake/Zen PC. Which route should I go with? I'm not much in a hurry as I could probably wait for Zen to come out.

I bought that whole thing for around USD 300 (tight budget, I know). Also, rumors of the GTX 950 is out there saying it's coming out in a few weeks. Is it worth it to wait?

Right now, I have an AMD A6-6400k. The graphics, are annoyingly bad. I built my PC last year and I'm planning to buy a dedicated graphics card. I thought of buying either GTX 750ti or R9 270. My budget is USD 200. I could buy a GTX 960 IF it is under that 200 mark. Meanwhile, between GTX 750ti and R9 270, which one should I buy? Edit: I just realized the R7 370 is already out... Any significant difference to the 270? Also, the GTX 950 is said to be released in a few weeks. Is it worth the wait?

This may look stupid, but I used this to help myself start touchtyping. 70-80 WPM right now! http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr If you can't handle the colorful and vibrancy, use this website: http://www.typingtest.com/

You know you're a techie when. . .

when you spend more than 2 hours on your computer a day. -
Your best: 348 Corrected CPM: 348 WPM: 70 Time left: 0 Your score: 348 CPM (that is 70 WPM) Your score beats or equals 89.49% of all! In reality, you typed 354 CPM, but you made 1 mistake (out of 64 words), which was not counted in the corrected scores. Your mistake was: Instead of "book", you typed "boook". I advise you to take a 2 minute break now. LOL, boook

Does the TK really make a space difference? If not, I'll just go full keyboard. Does the space make a significant difference in gaming, or any other scenarios?

Danang replied to Albatross's topic in Peripherals
If you're budget is around USD 50-100, get a mechanical keyboard like this: keyboard (Linus also made a review on this)
