So I just recently stumbled over some problems with my microphone and soundcard, and I'm really lost here. I got the Xonar DX card a while ago, but I didn't really use it until I finally got my brand new modmic and my Audio-technica ATH M50x in the mail. Everything went fine, but a friend of mine noticed something wierd during a skype call (using my modmic on the Xonar DX card); when I was playing really heavy games, he would hear a low buzzing noise coming from my mic. I looked into it, and everything points towards it being caused by coil whine on my graphics card, which I have no idea how to fix.

Now, to the weird problem. When I switched my modmic over to the integrated soundcard on my motherboard, he would hear a constant high-pitched noise from my mic, which is really annoying. I tried using one of my older crappy microphones on the integrated soundcard, and the high-pitched noise was gone, so it had to be something wrong with the mic, right? Well when I tried using the modmic on my laptop, I had no high-pitched noise problem. Oh, and by the way, the high pitched noise from the modmic is still there when I mute the mic. I would really apprechiate if you could help me with this one.

Update: I found out that the coil whine problem is caused by the Xonar DX card, by seeing if the same problem would occur if i tried using my friends Xonar DX card on my computer instead. His card worked perfectly on my PC, which means that there must be something wrong with mine, and I'll have to replace it. I still have no idea on how to fix the integrated soundcard problem though. Would be great if you could come with some suggestions :)

Eh if it's bad there is really nothing you can do to fix it short of sending it in. I would suggest you buy a Syba dac/amp. It's around $40.

Yeah, best solution for any kind of EMI is distance. Syba DAC is good and cheap, but there's other options in both price directions.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update: I sent in my soundcard and got a new one back, and the humming is still there when I play videogames. I have no idea what is causing this, especially since the noise wasnt there when I tried using my friends Xonar DX card.

Time to start actually listening to the advice in this thread, methinks.

Sounds like it's the only option that will actually produce results. But hey, you can sit around trying to troubleshoot a useless product if you want.

Yeah, I will probably end up buying a new one, and I've almost given up trying to fix it. It would be nice if someone knew how to fix it though.

If it can be fixed I doubt it's something DIY. Sounds like the card is straight defective. I'd bug ASUS again for help, too.
