Help with a CPU?

Go to solution Solved by VG Docs,

I have no idea where I'm supposed to put this, so if I put this in the wrong forum, I'm sorry.

On my build, which is for gaming, I made the leap from going from AMD to intel. As Intel gets better performance in pretty much everything.

Recently, half an hour ago, the price of an intel i5 4670k was jacked up to the price of an intel i5 4690k. From a little bit of searching the 4690k has almost no difference from the 4670k. Other than a tiny increase in clock speed and better compound.

So should I shell out the extra $4 or so and get the 4690k?

Or should I go back to AMD for some reason?

Sorry it's just that I'm so new to all of this and I really don't want to make a mistake like I did with my GPU.

A little edit here, do you guys have any advice for a motherboard? I was looking at MSI Gamer 5, or is there a better one for the same price?

Here's a quick (hopefully) painless explanation of the situation.

The 4690k is a somewhat minor improvement over the 4670k, but not only because of a higher clock speed.

There are differences with the CPU that make it a little better overclocker, and from what I've seen, should be improved in performance even at the same clock speed by a small amount.

At that high cost, in my opinion the 4690k is worth an extra $4, but make sure you have an appropriate motherboard for the CPU, because some motherboards may not support the 4690k out of the box like they would with a 4670k, mainly because it's newer.

If you need, you can tell us the model number of the motherboard so we can help you out, or if you haven't yet purchased one, we can help you figure that out as well.

Also, keep in mind - if you can manage to get the 4690k instead, it'll be a permanent increase in performance for your PC, that's another reason why I think it's worth the extra $4, even if you don't need that tiny bit of extra performance now, you probably will some time in the future, even if that's years away. :)

Edit: I didn't realize you already asked for a motherboard. My bad.

I personally like this one for a cheap alternative if you don't plan on SLI/Xfiring

What motherboard are you going to get? This is will play a large part in the decision because if you are getting a Z87 motherboard it will be a hassle to update the BIOS to make it work with the new CPUs. @Nikht_Revan_S539

4690k + z97 MSI motherboard (mate)

Go with the 4690K.

...and a z97 motherboard of course.

Go for the 4690K.

Pair it with a Z97 motherboard :D

*facepalm*

Ya, I edited it...

Thanks for the info!

I forgot mention that I won't be doing SLI/Crossfire.

At least not right now.
