Greetings forum lurkers,

I require your assistance in some part picking, compatibility checks, and recommendations for my first build. To be completely honest I have limited knowledge of what all the specs and details mean for each component but am limited on time in completing my build!

Background story:

Basically I have a 2011 15" macbook pro which bootcamp on it, in order for me to run windows 7 (I know this seems weird but please follow on). The bugger functions well when performing basic computer functions and even runs most games. Here's the part where you'll all go...that's why you shouldn't buy a mac. Whenever I run any FPS based game, the computer heats up terribly and the fans go into overdrive, producing sounds similar to that of a jet engine. I also need to lower all the settings to minimal in games such as black ops 2 to get a decent 60fps. Its already had its motherboard fried once and replaced with a repaired one (basically second hand). MY guess at whats happening inside is that the AMD radeon 6750 graphics card is overheating rapidly and putting the fans straight into overdrive, but since the fans are too small to hand such heat and the vent to the outside is so small, heat gets trapped inside the mac and starts to overheat all my other components, decreasing my Macs performance overtime and even damaging some components. Now because of this and a few other reasons I have decided to try to take the laptop apart and use some of its components towards my DIY desktop PC. I have $500 dollars to spend on a graphics card, ATX motherboard, disk drive and power supply.

The components I'm thinking of using are:

- 8gb RAM (not sure what brand)
- Intel core i7 2720qm CPU
- 250GB SSD

Unfortunately I could not find anywhere what brand of RAM OR SSD I had.

The components I am buying for my build are:
- ASUS GeForce GTX 660 2gb
- LG GH24NSB0 DVD/CD optical drive

What I need from you guys:

- An ATX motherboard recommendation
- A power supply recommendation

- Are all the parts listed compatible with each other
- your recommendations on any parts that I should buy instead

A thanks in advance to any kind person who decides to help me :P

that CPU you mentioned is a mobile CPU

not exactly a desktop CPU

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I don't think you can use any laptop parts in a desktop apart from the hdd. If that's what you're trying to do.

Ah ok, I think the ram in it is standard too though. Anyway then what would you recommend for a decent CPU in a $150 budget that suits my grapics card?

The only things you might be able to utilize are the HDD and SSD. The CPU is most-likely soldered onto the MB.

Also the RAM is going to be SO-Dimm (I am not 100% sure) that means it wont work on a normal desktop mobo.

Spoiler

Case Bitfenix Ghost, Mobo Asus Maximus VIII Ranger, CPU i7 6700K @4.2 Ghz cooled by Arctic cooling Freezer i30, (barely). GPU Nvidia GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 @1519Mhz core, RAM 16Gb Crucial Ballistix CL16 @2400Mhz. SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

Then am I better off just selling the Mac and using the money towards those parts I need?

Basically yes.

I don't think you can use any laptop to make a desktop gaming PC. Most mobile CPU's are soldered, and some have soldered ram too. And if the ram isn't soldered the modules will be SO-DIMMs which are used in maybe 2 desktop motherboards. So yeah just sell your Mac and buy all new parts.

Yeah its from my Mac as I said. It supports the sockets FCBGA1224, FCPGA988 and is that mean't to be it's motherboard?

While the socket supports it there is only one PC cooling company i know of that has a mounting bracket for a naked die and that is for waterclocking. Are you doing a waterloop? If you are not then you will end up crushing your CPU's die therefore killing the CPU.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Almost all high end laptops has the CPU not soldered to the socket and can be replaced or upgraded as desired. His problem is what he will cool the i7 2720qm with.

I looked at most high end ASUS gaming laptops and they all had an i7 4700HQ which is BGA. I think all HQ cpu's are BGA. MQ series is PGA and QM seems to be BGA or PGA.
